Director of Harry Potter in Talks for Amazon’s Bond Film

James Bond is poised to embark on an exciting new journey—this time with an Oscar-winning director at the helm. In a recent masterclass held in Paris, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón confirmed that he is currently in discussions to direct the upcoming installment of the iconic Bond franchise. This 26th film is being touted as the most crucial in the series’ extensive history, marking the first release since Amazon MGM Studios assumed creative control over the beloved character. Cuarón shared his enthusiasm with the audience at the Paris Cinema Club:

“There is indeed THIS project under discussion, and I have the desire — if it happens — to revisit this story in my own way.”

The celebrated filmmaker’s remarks, initially shared by X user @Simon___Robert, arrive at a time when Amazon is actively working to redefine the future of its newly acquired spy franchise. Although details regarding casting and plot remain tightly under wraps—reflecting the early stages of development without a completed script—industry insiders have hinted at a “fresh, exotic” reboot of the Bond legacy. Bringing Cuarón on board would undoubtedly signal a bold direction for the franchise moving forward.

Interestingly, this is not Cuarón’s first encounter with the prospect of directing a Bond film. During the 2024 Marrakech Film Festival, he recounted how he previously declined an opportunity to direct within the franchise. “Ages ago I was offered a Bond film,” he reflected. “And I said, ‘Yeah, cool. Maybe Bond. I am going to do one.’ However, as the process unfolded, particularly with the dialogue and action sequences being handled by a separate [separate] team, it felt very disjointed.”

Cuarón further elaborated that a discussion with renowned filmmaker Joel Coen played a pivotal role in his decision to step back at that time. He recalled Coen’s insight: “It probably falls into the category of a film I want to watch but not do.” This conversation imparted a valuable lesson for Cuarón—some films are better enjoyed from the audience’s perspective rather than as a director. However, it appears that his viewpoint has evolved, and he now seems eager to immerse himself in the world of 007 on his own terms.

Discover Alfonso Cuarón’s Cinematic Legacy

Alfonso Cuarón is no stranger to the realm of franchise filmmaking, having significantly shaped and enhanced the magical universe of Harry Potter with his atmospheric, stylistically sophisticated, and critically acclaimed third installment in 2004. Since then, he has gone on to direct modern cinematic masterpieces such as Children of Men and Roma, the latter of which earned him his second Academy Award for Best Director. Should he take the helm of the Bond film, it would also bring him back together with his longtime collaborator David Heyman, the esteemed producer of Prisoner of Azkaban, who has been appointed to produce the upcoming films alongside Amy Pascal, further enhancing the anticipation surrounding this project.

Stay tuned for exciting updates as the project continues to develop and unfold.
