Director Reveals Deadpool Salary: ‘Not a Ton of Money’
Tim Miller has opened up about his earnings as the director of the blockbuster film Deadpool, shedding light on the financial realities faced by first-time directors in Hollywood.
Released in 2016, Marvel’s Deadpool featured Ryan Reynolds as the iconic anti-hero, known as the Merc With a Mouth. The film not only captivated audiences but also achieved tremendous commercial success, grossing over $750 million at the box office. This phenomenal performance led to the creation of two sequels: Deadpool 2 in 2018 and the much-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, further solidifying its status as a major franchise in the superhero genre.

In a candid interview with Collider, Miller shared, “You might not realize, but being a first-time director in Hollywood is not necessarily lucrative. To be exact, I earned $225,000 for directing Deadpool. While that may seem like a substantial amount, when you break it down over two years of dedicated work, it doesn’t feel like a fortune. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity, but that’s the reality of the business for someone in my position. My agent even humorously pointed out that I was making less than what some directors earn for a single episode of The Walking Dead!”
He continued, “Many people assume that everyone in Hollywood is raking in millions, but that’s not always the case. While I don’t want to come across as ungrateful, I have to acknowledge that achieving this milestone at age 50 was a dream come true for me, considering I had aspired to direct a feature film my entire life.”
Marking Miller’s debut in feature film direction, Deadpool set the stage for his future projects, including the 2019 release Terminator: Dark Fate. Additionally, he directed the reshoots for the upcoming film Borderlands in 2024 and took on the role of executive producer for all three films in the popular Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, showcasing his versatility and influence in the film industry.
On the television front, Miller is the creative mind behind the acclaimed Love, Death & Robots animated anthology series on Netflix. Furthermore, he has recently launched another animated anthology series titled Secret Level for Amazon Prime Video, expanding his creative footprint across multiple platforms.
Fans of the film can currently enjoy Deadpool streaming on Disney+ and Max, allowing new audiences to experience the unique blend of action, humor, and irreverence that the film is known for.
