The acclaimed Russo brothers are making their much-anticipated return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to helm Avengers: Doomsday along with Avengers: Secret Wars. The excitement surrounding the production is palpable, as it is set to kick off in a matter of weeks. Among the cast, Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role, but this time as the formidable Doctor Doom, injecting new life into the character that fans have long awaited.

In a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Joe Russo shared insights about Downey Jr.’s commitment to the role. He described the actor’s engagement as a “very intense process developing the character,” highlighting how deeply he is immersed in his portrayal. Anthony Russo chimed in, emphasizing, “That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is.” This level of dedication is indicative of the creative depth Downey Jr. is bringing to the role.

Furthermore, Joe Russo elaborated on Downey Jr.’s creative process, stating that the actor is “writing backstory, costume ideas” for Doctor Doom. He noted, “I think he just loves really rich three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.” This approach suggests a revitalization of Doctor Doom that could redefine his role in the franchise.

Downey Jr. previously revealed that the journey to embracing Doctor Doom began nearly two years ago during a meeting with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. He reminisced, “Probably a year ago, because Feige and I have kept in touch,” indicating a close-knit relationship with key figures in the Marvel universe. “We’re pals. Favreau and Feige and I have kept in touch. I’m close with the Russo brothers. We have other business we’re doing.” This connection has fostered a collaborative spirit that is sure to enhance the storytelling in Avengers: Doomsday.

He continued to share, “And then we both realized, over time, that it was another thing that just disproves any doubt anyone could ever have about that guy. [He’s] a very sophisticated, creative thinker about, ‘How can we not go backwards? How can we not disappoint expectations? How can we continue to beat expectations?’” This dialogue with Feige sparked an exploration into the character of Victor von Doom, leading Downey Jr. to state, “Let’s get Victor von Doom right. Let’s get that right.” This determination shows a commitment to honoring the character’s legacy while bringing fresh perspectives to the film.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, followed closely by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.
