Eyesight Loss: Elton John’s ‘Distressing’ Update

Elton John, the legendary musician, is providing a deeply emotional update regarding his vision challenges that have surfaced recently.

While appearing on Good Morning America in late 2023, the iconic 78-year-old rock star disclosed that he has tragically lost sight in his right eye due to an eye infection he endured during the summer. This revelation sheds light on how personal health issues can impact even the most celebrated artists.

In a revealing interview with The Times of London, released on April 4, Sir Elton candidly discussed the extent of his eyewear difficulties and their influence on his daily life.

“I can see you, but I can’t see TV, I can’t read,” shared the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. He expressed how challenging it has been not to witness his sons, Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12, while they engage in activities such as rugby and soccer. “It has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up,” he added, highlighting the emotional toll of his condition.

John, who is a proud father, described the situation as “distressing,” emphasizing the emotional weight of his vision loss. He shares his sons with his husband, David Furnish, and the bond they share as a family remains a source of strength for him.

“You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have,” the legendary artist said. He remains grateful for his wonderful family and noted that he can still see a bit out of [my left eye] to appreciate the moments they share. “So you say to yourself, ‘Just get on with it,’” he concluded, showing resilience in the face of adversity.

During his appearance on Good Morning America in November 2024, John elaborated on the circumstances surrounding his eye infection, mentioning that it occurred while he was in the South of France. “It’s been four months since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye’s not the greatest. I’m, kind of, stuck in the moment,” he explained to ABC News’ Robin Roberts, reflecting on the ongoing challenges he faces.

The celebrated hitmaker also indicated that his vision problems could hinder his ability to create new music, which is a significant concern for someone whose career has revolved around musical expression.

“I can’t see a lyric, for starters. We’re taking an initiative to try and get it better, but at the moment, that’s really what we’re concentrating on,” he remarked. “It’s never fortunate for anything like this to happen. It kinda floored me, and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything,” he candidly admitted, illustrating the profound impact on his creative process and daily life.

The following month, John bravely addressed his vision loss during the stage debut of The Devil Wears Prada in London. “As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight,” he told the audience at the Dominion Theatre, as reported by the Daily Mail. “I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed listening to it,” he added, emphasizing his enduring passion for music.

John also lightened the mood regarding his eyesight challenges during the 2025 Golden Globes, where he took the stage alongside his friend and fellow Grammy winner, Brandi Carlile, who co-wrote the song “Never Too Late” for his documentary Elton John: Never Too Late.

“It’s a very special night for me to be here because, I don’t know if you know, but there’s been stories going around about my regressive eyesight,” John humorously addressed the audience. “I just want to reassure everybody — it’s not as bad as it seems. I’m so pleased to be here with my co-host, Rihanna,” he said, gesturing towards Carlile.

Despite facing significant challenges with his eyesight, John collaborated with Carlile on a new album titled Who Believes in Angels?, which was released on Friday. The talented duo is set to make an appearance on Saturday Night Live as musical guests on Saturday (April 5), and the following day, they will host a special one-hour concert in celebration of their new album, showcasing their resilience and dedication to their art.
