Rosie O’Donnell Discusses Kamala Harris’ Support and Trump’s Confounding Victory on Irish Television
Rosie O’Donnell has made a significant life change, relocating to Ireland after publicly announcing her departure from the United States in response to Donald Trump winning the presidency for a second time in 2024. Now residing in a different country, she is candidly expressing her skepticism about the political landscape and the state of affairs in America.
During her inaugural appearance on Irish television, Rosie O’Donnell joined the host Patrick Kielty on the popular show Late Late Show, where she insinuated that Elon Musk may have played a role in influencing her former boss’ remarkable electoral success.
Elon Musk, who has recently been appointed to lead Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency, raises questions regarding the clarity of his responsibilities and the extent of his authority within this new governmental framework.

Despite his status as the world’s wealthiest individual, Musk undeniably has the full support and attention of the president. O’Donnell hinted at her belief that he might have financially contributed to the electoral victory, whether through monetary means or by leveraging his considerable influence within the technology sector.
“I question why, for the first time in American history, a president has won every swing state while being best friends with his largest donor, a man who controls the internet,” O’Donnell remarked, highlighting the unusual nature of this political dynamic.
According to The Washington Post, Musk has contributed a staggering total of $288 million towards Trump’s electoral campaign, while The New York Times recently reported that he is looking to invest an additional $100 million into the presidency.
Musk is also the owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), which ranks among the top social media platforms globally. At Trump’s indoor inauguration, Musk was joined by other tech giants like Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google.
“So, I hope that this election result will be investigated,” O’Donnell expressed regarding Trump’s victory, “to determine whether it was simply an anomaly or if other factors played a role on election night, especially when Kamala Harris was drawing crowds that Trump could not match.”

O’Donnell Addresses Trump’s Connections to Alleged Sexual Abusers
O’Donnell, a long-time critic of Trump, took the opportunity to challenge the president on several issues during her Late Late Show appearance. She specifically condemned his decision to invite Conor McGregor to the White House, following the fighter’s civil lawsuit loss over sexual assault allegations last year, as reported by The AP, where Nikita Hand was awarded €250,000 in damages. McGregor has denied these claims.
“It is perplexing to me that the President of the United States has so many friends who are sexual abusers,” O’Donnell commented, describing McGregor’s White House visit as “very disheartening.” She continued, “I think it indicates that we are in serious trouble as a nation.”
“The foundation of our nation is a melting pot of individuals who are all created equal, entitled to pursue life, liberty, and happiness,” she argued passionately. “That was the promise made to us as Americans, and to think that cruelty and a lack of empathy are values emanating from the highest office in our nation is overwhelmingly sad to me personally.”

Trump’s Inexplicable Grudge Against O’Donnell
During the interview, O’Donnell expressed her surprise upon hearing her name mentioned during a recent meeting between Trump and Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Micheál Martin. A conservative journalist from Real America’s Voice asked Trump, “Why on earth would you let Rosie O’Donnell move to Ireland? I think she’s going to lower your happiness levels.”
While Martin appeared to imply he was unfamiliar with the situation—and perhaps even unaware of who O’Donnell is—Trump humorously responded, “Thank you, I appreciate that question.”
He then queried Martin, “Do you know who she is?” before adding, “You’re better off not knowing.”
On The Late Late Show, O’Donnell stated that the president “uses me as a punchline whenever he feels the need. He’s been doing it for twenty years, and I’m still not used to it every time he does.”

Expanding on that context, O’Donnell recounted that her troubles with Trump began “when I told the truth about him on a program called The View—where it was my role to discuss popular culture and politics. I mentioned his bankruptcies, discussed all the sexual assault allegations against him, and noted that he was not the businessman everyone made him out to be. He was very angry, to say the least, and he hasn’t let it go since.”
Speaking about the latest incident involving Trump, O’Donnell expressed her discomfort that they put the Taoiseach in such a position without treating him with the respect that a leader of his stature deserves while visiting the White House. She explained this to Kielty during the interview.
She also mentioned that she sent a note of apology to the Irish leader following the incident, clarifying some of the background regarding her and Trump, and she received a response thanking her for her note.

O’Donnell Embraces Her Irish Roots and New Life in Ireland
O’Donnell revealed that she moved to Ireland in mid-January, coinciding with Trump’s inauguration on January 20th as the 47th president of the United States. With Irish grandparents, she has a deep-rooted connection to the country and is currently in the process of obtaining Irish citizenship, as reported by TMZ.
“It has genuinely felt like home since I’ve been here,” she expressed. O’Donnell has stated that, for the time being, she has no plans to return to the United States, although she hasn’t completely closed the door on the possibility.
“When it’s safe for all citizens to have equal rights in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” she mentioned in a TikTok video earlier this month announcing her move.
TMZ reported that they reached out to the White House regarding her departure from the U.S., receiving a response from spokesperson Taylor Rogers, who stated, “Promises made, promises kept. Good riddance!”
O’Donnell joins a growing list of individuals who have left the U.S. since Trump’s presidency began, including high-profile figures like Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi.
