Godsmack Members Confirm Departure from the Band

Shannon Larkin, the former drummer of Godsmack, has publicly disclosed that both he and guitarist Tony Rombola made the decision to leave the band last year, primarily due to their desire to step away from the rigorous demands of touring. This significant news has resonated with fans who have followed their journey over the years.

The band confirmed this development in an official statement shared on Instagram, which is detailed below. They expressed, “After nearly 30 incredible years, two of our most cherished members, Tony Rombola and Shannon Larkin, have chosen to retire from the band permanently, amicably, and solely to embrace a more simple and peaceful lifestyle away from the pressures of touring.”

“This decision was not made lightly. Tony and Shannon have played pivotal roles in our history, contributing their exceptional talents, creativity, and passion that have profoundly influenced our music and message. Together, we have shared countless unforgettable experiences and heartfelt moments with fans like you all over the world. We are incredibly grateful for every cherished memory we’ve built together.”

The band further reassured fans that “Shannon and Tony will always remain a part of our family” and encouraged everyone to “celebrate the memories we’ve created while eagerly anticipating our future together.”

Fans quickly noticed the absence of Larkin and Rombola when Godsmack kicked off their 2025 European tour last month in Sofia, Bulgaria. The talented lead singer Sully Erna and bassist Robbie Merrill were joined by drummer Will Hunt (known for his work with Evanescence) and guitarist Sam Bam Koltun (who has collaborated with Dorothy and Faster Pussycat).

“I can tell you that there have definitely been some changes that have happened in the last few months,” Erna stated during an interview with Bulgaria’s Z Rock radio station at that time. “These changes may be either permanent or temporary, but I assure you that everyone is in good health and high spirits. The band is more energized than ever.”

Shannon Larkin Shares Insights on His Departure from Godsmack

In a now-deleted Facebook video, which was transcribed by Blabbermouth, Larkin elaborated on his and Rombola’s choice to step back from Godsmack. He conveyed, “We did officially quit the band last year after extensive discussions with Sully and Robbie, who understood our desire to no longer tour. That was our primary reason. We recognized their commitment to continue touring, and we reached a mutual understanding. In the end, Godsmack is out there touring while we are content living our lives.”

He went on to share, “Tony is turning 60, and I am turning 58. It’s not about physical limitations; we simply wish to be home surrounded by everything we love. After 40 years of touring, and 28 for Rombola, we decided it was time to step away.”

Larkin emphasized that there is no animosity between the current and former members of the band. “It wasn’t a negative situation,” he stated. “I will elaborate more on this in the future, but it’s all about love. We are brothers for life with Sully and Robbie, and we wish Will and Sam all the best. To all the fans, keep supporting them—they’re doing amazing things.”

He concluded by reflecting on Sully‘s words, “All good things must eventually come to an end.” He clarified that while Godsmack hasn’t come to an end, this marks a new chapter for them, as well as for both Tony and himself. “We are already working on new music, and everyone is in a happy place.”

Godsmack is set to continue their tour alongside Drowning Pool and P.O.D. until April 12.
