Guitar Solos: Alex Lifeson’s Change of Heart
The renowned former Rush guitarist, Alex Lifeson, has unveiled a captivating video for the latest single from his art-rock ensemble, Envy of None. Titled “Under the Stars,” this track brings a wave of relief to fans who were concerned about his recent decision to step back from performing solos. The release demonstrates Lifeson’s enduring creativity and musical prowess, ensuring that listeners are treated to his signature sound.
This new single marks the second advance release from Envy of None’s eagerly awaited second album. While specific release details remain under wraps, Lifeson collaborates with bassist and lead songwriter Andy Curren, alongside guitarist-keyboardist and producer Alf Annibalini, and vocalist Maiah Wynne. The rhythm section is enhanced by the talented guest drummer Joe Vitale, contributing to a rich and dynamic sound.
In addition to his guitar work, Lifeson showcases his versatility by incorporating mandola and oud into “Under the Stars.” Curren has indicated that the track features a solo reminiscent of Rush’s iconic style, providing a familiar yet fresh experience for long-time fans.

Curren shared insights into the thematic essence of their music, stating he’s “a romantic at heart and the message here is universal. Soul mates – two against the world!” This perspective adds a profound layer to the song, resonating with listeners on a deeper emotional level.
Envy of None made their debut in 2022 with a self-titled album that showcased Lifeson’s evolution as an artist. Post-launch, Lifeson hinted at the possibility that he might have played his final solo. Interestingly, only one track on the album, “Spy House,” features one of his classic guitar leads, which reflects his contemplative approach to soloing.
He remarked, “That was the first song I wrote at the end of the Rush tour. It has a solo because it was [still] a natural thing for me to go into. … I feel like I’ve fully explored the whole area of soloing.” This statement underscores Lifeson’s journey in redefining his musical identity.
“Under the Stars” follows Envy of None’s earlier single “Not Dead Yet,” which debuted in November, showcasing the band’s continuous evolution and creative output.
