Heavy Lyrics Explored by Jack Kays

On Wednesday’s Loudwire Nights (Feb. 5), acclaimed artist Jack Kays sat down with host Chuck Armstrong to discuss the exciting release of his debut full-length album, DEADBEAT!. To dive deeper into their conversation, listen to the full interview in the player located near the end of this article.

“This is the most official release I’ve accomplished so far; it’s the longest project I’ve ever worked on, and it marks our first proper album release that we’re actually touring,” Kays shared with Chuck, reflecting on the significance of this milestone in his career.

“I?m incredibly excited and proud of what I?ve created,” he added, highlighting the personal investment he has made in this project.

A crucial aspect of the bond Kays has cultivated with his audience over the years?and certainly a factor in the ongoing connection fostered by DEADBEAT! and his extensive supporting tour?is the profound emotional weight and authenticity present in his lyrics. This is something he approaches with great seriousness.

“To write about subjects that are incredibly challenging, such as addiction, grief from losing a friend, or the anxiety associated with aging, you really need to have processed these experiences to some degree,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of personal experience in songwriting.

“You must have navigated through these feelings if you wish to express them in a mature and timeless manner,” he asserted, underscoring his commitment to authenticity.

Kays acknowledged that, as someone who crafts songs in solitude, it can be emotionally taxing to lay down such raw lyrics. However, by the time he enters the studio, those feelings are no longer “fresh,” which allows for a smoother creative process.

“It feels incredibly relieving,” he remarked, describing the cathartic nature of his songwriting.

“Catharsis is the most fitting term to describe it. I absolutely love performing these lyrics, the dynamic build of these songs, and reaching that climactic moment. Each time, it feels profoundly fulfilling,” he shared, illustrating the joy he derives from his craft.

One of the standout tracks on DEADBEAT! is “My Promise (90 Day),” featuring Travis Barker of Blink-182. This poignant song addresses the theme of addiction and is further enriched by a heartfelt and hopeful music video.

Kays revealed that he invited his fans to share photos and stories about their experiences with losing loved ones to addiction.

He was taken aback by the overwhelming response.

“In just the first day, we received 200 responses,” he said, visibly moved by the outpouring of shared experiences.

“It truly astonished me. While I am aware of the struggles many face with addiction, this was a real-time demonstration of its profound impact and devastation,” he reflected, acknowledging the widespread nature of the issue.

Seeing his inbox filled with photographs, videos, and narratives from individuals grappling with the same addiction challenges he faces was heavy for Kays. Yet, it also instilled a sense of hope within him.

“Although all those individuals have passed, their photo and story were shared by someone who is still here,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of remembrance and community support.

Key Insights from Jack Kays’ Interview on Loudwire Nights

  • His evolution as a songwriter: “Initially, when I started writing songs, I focused on topics that didn’t resonate with me personally. My early work was mainly in the SoundCloud rap genre… As I honed my craft, I began to express my true feelings about issues that affected me deeply.”
  • The significance of Travis Barker’s friendship and mentorship in his musical journey: “The first song I had that gained traction is ‘Morbid Mind,’ and Travis discovered me through that track… At that time, I lacked the resources to produce a full punk record; I was just recording songs acoustically. He has a keen ear for punk music and found my song when it had barely 10,000 streams.”
  • His passion for cooking: “While I haven’t worked in a professional kitchen for over five years, I still consider myself a passionate home cook, having received formal training in culinary arts.”
