Renowned director Jaume Collet-Serra, known for his work on Carry On, is set to collaborate once again with Netflix on an intriguing psychological thriller titled An Innocent Girl. Jaume Collet-Serra previously directed the horror-thriller film The Woman in the Yard, which has garnered around $17 million at the global box office since its release in theatres last month. However, it was Carry On, released in December, that truly captured audiences’ hearts, rapidly ascending to one of the most popular movies on the Netflix streaming platform. Speculation surrounding a potential sequel to Carry On has been rampant, but before diving into any follow-ups, Variety reports that Collet-Serra and Netflix are prioritizing the development of the dramatic psychological thriller An Innocent Girl.
The original screenplay for An Innocent Girl was penned by Michael Mohan, who is recognized for directing films such as The Voyeurs and Immaculate. Notably, Marc Guggenheim, the creator behind the acclaimed DC Comics-inspired television series Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, has been brought on board to refine the script. The film’s logline offers a tantalizing glimpse into its premise: it follows a young, ambitious woman who, after being seduced by a powerful couple from Washington D.C., finds herself ensnared in a perilous world filled with sex, power, and murder.
In terms of production, the film is being overseen by Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, both of whom have extensive experience working with Guggenheim on various DC projects. They are producing the film under their banner, Berlanti/Schechter Films. Additionally, Guggenheim will serve as an executive producer alongside Mike McGrath and Scott Greenberg, ensuring that the project receives the creative guidance it needs to succeed.
As highlighted by Variety, Carry On has achieved remarkable success, currently ranking as the second-most watched film on Netflix with an impressive 172.1 million views and over 344.1 million hours streamed. This extraordinary performance underscores why the streaming giant is eager to continue its partnership with Jaume Collet-Serra, as his projects consistently resonate with audiences and generate significant viewership.
In addition to An Innocent Girl, it was recently reported that Collet-Serra has also committed to directing a survival thriller titled Play Dead. This new project is being described as a thrilling blend of Don’t Breathe and 1917. Although Play Dead is not associated with Netflix, filming is anticipated to commence in May. Consequently, An Innocent Girl will enter production only after Collet-Serra completes his work on Play Dead. Regarding the potential for a Carry On sequel, Collet-Serra expressed, “I would like to definitely make another one. When we started with the movie, it certainly felt like one unique story in a moment in time with a set of characters. If an idea comes to us that feels like we can do something that is as original as the first one, and that can connect with the audience in the same way, then we’ll explore that.“
