Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains Reflects on a Regrettable Film Role Decision

Alice In Chains’ guitarist Jerry Cantrell has had a few notable appearances in films throughout his career, yet one significant role stands out as a major regret for him. Cantrell, along with a number of other influential Seattle rock musicians, made memorable cameos in Cameron Crowe’s iconic 1992 film Singles. This film featured not only the rest of Alice In Chains but also notable members from Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. In addition to this, he had a part in Crowe’s acclaimed 1996 film Jerry Maguire, which starred Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise.

However, many fans might be surprised to learn that Cantrell was offered the opportunity to appear in a third film directed by Crowe a few years later. This film, Almost Famous, would have featured him in a significant role that he ultimately turned down.

During a recent episode of The Adamantium Podcast, Cantrell revealed, “He wanted me to be a bass player. One of my biggest regrets is turning Cameron Crowe down for his third consecutive movie.” The guitarist shared that he was in a challenging phase of his life and was simultaneously on tour supporting his album Degradation Trip. Despite his reasoning, he expressed a deep sense of regret over the decision.

In his reflections, Cantrell noted that Crowe had crafted an elaborate backstory for the fictional bass player character, describing him as “knowledgeable” and “uppity.” Since Cantrell was unable to accept the role, the part eventually went to Mark Kozelek, an actor and musician known for his work with the indie rock band Sun Kil Moon.

Cantrell elaborated on the character’s unique traits, mentioning that Crowe had shaped him to be a fervent admirer of Paul McCartney, famously declaring, “McCartney is God.” Cantrell humorously recalled how he would passionately defend McCartney’s greatness in discussions about bass players: “In a couple of conversations where bass players would come up, I’d come off the top turnbuckle and say, ‘Fuck you, McCartney is a god.’” This reflects not only his admiration for the iconic musician but also his strong personality.

During the podcast, Cantrell also praised the dedication and effort actors put into their craft, especially the lengthy shooting schedules that accompany film production. He candidly admitted to feeling a bit nervous while filming his scenes in Jerry Maguire, but he fondly remembered how supportive both Cruise and Crowe were, which helped boost his confidence throughout the process.
