Over the course of Godzilla‘s remarkable 70-year legacy in cinema, he has made his grand entrance from various home territories. Among these, the legendary Monster Island stands out as his most iconic residence, historically shared with numerous other kaiju. While many of these formidable creatures have not graced a Godzilla film in over five decades, during the later years of the Showa Era, a diverse cast of Godzilla’s allies and adversaries found themselves loosely inhabiting the island. Although the specific location of Monster Island was never clearly defined, it was rumored to be situated in a tropical climate somewhere within the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
Monsterland made its debut in the classic 1968 film Destroy All Monsters, with footage of various kaiju inhabiting this mysterious land being repurposed in subsequent Showa Era films, presented as scenes from Monster Island. In a more recent portrayal, Monster Island was referenced in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, albeit under an alternate name and featuring a significantly reduced number of kaiju. Regardless of its cinematic representation, the idea of a monster-infested island has remained a pivotal element in the ever-evolving lore surrounding Godzilla.

Giant Condor / Giant Eagle: A Brief Overview of This Lesser-Known Kaiju
The Unnamed Obscure Bird That Momentarily Bothered Godzilla
The kaiju known as the “Giant Condor” is aptly named, being essentially an oversized predatory bird. While it is difficult to categorize this creature alongside the more prominent kaiju like Godzilla, Mothra, or Rodan, it has made its mark in the franchise. Its debut occurred in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, where it swooped down on Godzilla on the shores of Letchi Island, pestering him momentarily before being dispatched by his atomic breath.
This creature reappeared in All Monsters Attack but was renamed as the “Giant Eagle,” experiencing a nearly identical fate. This encounter was portrayed as happening on Monster Island instead of Letchi Island, thus technically classifying the Giant Condor as one of the kaiju residing on Monster Island within the franchise canon.

Manda: The Serpentine Kaiju and Godzilla’s Unlikely Ally
The Serpentine Kaiju That Has Been An Ally of Godzilla
Manda made his first appearance in Toho’s film Atragon, which is not part of the Godzilla universe. However, he later appeared in Destroy All Monsters, where he joined the ranks of Monsterland’s kaiju, gathering at the base of Mount Fuji to take on the Kilaak base once liberated from the mind control of the Kilaaks. Although many kaiju participated in a fierce battle against King Ghidorah, Manda chose to remain on the sidelines alongside Varan and Baragon.

Footage of Manda from Destroy All Monsters was later reused in All Monsters Attack, where he was depicted as one of the residents of Monster Island alongside Godzilla and his fellow kaiju. While the events on Monster Island presented in All Monsters Attack technically unfolded in the dreams of Ichiro Miki, it is widely accepted that the kaiju he envisioned actually inhabit Monster Island, thereby allowing Manda to be included in this unique ecosystem.
