ScreenRant had the opportunity to speak with Michael Cudlitz, who directed this pivotal episode, about the significant moment between the characters. When asked if he had been aware from the onset that Lex and Amanda’s relationship would take this direction, or if he discovered this twist only when he received the script, he shared an intriguing anecdote regarding how this plot had been accidentally hinted at prior to its reveal. He stated:

There’s kind of a hint of it, which is really interesting. Our PR department kind of slipped up a tiny bit, and no one really picked up on it. There’s a still photo that was released with me reaching out and touching Amanda’s face that we did in two takes, when she brings me to the hotel for the first time, to my new office across from the Smallville Gazette. [When] we started [filming], I said, ‘Oh my gosh, should we play this?’ and we were like, ‘You know what? We’re not sure if we want to play it yet.’

But I reached out and I touched [her] face when I say, ‘There’s a reason I trust only you’ and that still was released, but if you see the edit of the scene, I never touch her in the scene that we actually did, because they wanted to save it for later. So when that photo came out, I was like, ‘Oh no!’ and nobody said a word. So it’s absolutely underneath everything. There’s a tension there, and we don’t know what it is, but as it builds, as the season goes on, we realize what is potentially happening there. Yvonne Chapman is honestly, again, incredible to work with – lovely, smart, talented, [she] was so present. Coming into a show that’s already running 100 miles an hour, and to just jump right on, seamlessly, she’s incredibly talented. I’m really excited for what she does in the future and I cannot wait to work with her again because she was just a gem.

For the majority of viewers, the storyline involving Superman & Lois season 4’s Amanda and Lex likely comes as a surprise. Even if some fans glimpsed the early promotional images, the concept of Lex and Amanda being romantically linked probably did not arise until viewers reached episode 8. However, considering the overall narrative, their emotional connection makes sense, especially since Superman & Lois season 4 has established a solid foundation for their relationship since Amanda’s introduction, allowing fans to appreciate the depth of their bond.

According to Cudlitz, the scene in question was ultimately not included in the episode of Superman & Lois season 4. The reasons behind the premature release of the photos remain ambiguous; however, it appears that this did not affect the show’s reception. The revelation of Lex and Amanda’s deeper relationship went unnoticed by most fans until the eighth episode aired. This incident serves as a humorous behind-the-scenes moment for Superman & Lois season 4, something that can happen occasionally in television production.

While it is amusing to note that the promotional image (as displayed above) was not originally intended for public release by The CW, it is conceivable that not all fans stay updated with promotional campaigns. As a result, many viewers may have been genuinely surprised by the romantic development between Lex and Amanda. The outcome of their relationship by the end of Superman & Lois remains uncertain, particularly as the series approaches its climactic confrontation between Lex and the iconic Man of Steel.
