Liam Payne Remembered as Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter Shine
The 2024 MTV EMAs celebrated remarkable talent, with Taylor Swift, Tyla, and Sabrina Carpenter emerging as the night’s top achievers. The event also paid tribute to Liam Payne, who tragically passed away in Argentina nearly a month prior, adding a heartfelt tone to the evening’s festivities.
“I want to take a moment to honor someone who meant so much to us all. We lost him recently, and he was a vital part of both the MTV community and my personal life. Many of you at home and everyone here tonight felt his impact,” expressed the show’s host, Rita Ora. She reminisced about her collaboration with the late One Direction member on the 2018 hit “For You (Fifty Shades Freed),” highlighting the deep connections formed through their shared experiences in the music industry.
“He had an incredibly generous spirit and was always the first to extend a helping hand whenever possible,” Ora said, her voice thick with emotion. “He filled every room with his warmth and positivity, leaving an indelible mark on all of us,” she continued, clearly moved by the loss. This heartfelt tribute resonated deeply with the audience, reflecting the profound influence Liam Payne had on both his peers and fans alike.
The EMAs, held at the Co-op Live arena in Manchester, England, on Sunday, November 10, also showcased a moving video tribute dedicated to Payne, celebrating his contributions to music and his lasting legacy in the hearts of fans and fellow artists.
Despite not being present at the Manchester event, Taylor Swift dominated the night, clinching the most awards, including Best Artist, Best Live, Best U.S. Act, and Best Video for her chart-topping single “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone. This achievement underscores her status as a leading figure in the music industry, showcasing her artistic versatility and widespread appeal.
“I genuinely want to express my gratitude to Post Malone for being the most incredible co-star imaginable,” Swift stated in a pre-recorded acceptance speech, reflecting on their collaborative spirit and the magic they created together in the studio. Her words echoed the appreciation felt by many in the industry for artists who uplift one another.
Following closely behind Swift, Tyla was recognized with three awards, including Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act. The South African sensation, who received a Global Impact Award at Billboard’s R&B No. 1s event earlier this year, delivered one of the evening’s most captivating performances. Her energetic medley of “Push 2 Start” and “Water,” accompanied by dynamic dancers, highlighted her talent and charisma, further solidifying her place in the global music scene.
“I can’t believe this is happening,” Tyla exclaimed while accepting the Best Afrobeats award from LL Cool J. “All the nominees are phenomenal. They have propelled Afrobeats into the global spotlight, and I’m genuinely honored to receive this award… Afrobeats has opened countless doors for African music, and I am immensely grateful,” she said, emphasizing the genre’s growing influence and recognition on the world stage.
Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, who were unable to attend the ceremony, were honored with Best Song for “Espresso” and Best Pop, respectively. Notably, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX also missed the event, failing to secure wins in any of the five categories they were nominated in, demonstrating the competitive landscape of the awards.
The show kicked off with a high-energy performance by Benson Boone, marking the first time the EMAs were held in the U.K. since 2017. He captivated the audience with his songs “Slow It Down” and “Beautiful Things,” beginning his set while suspended in the air, playing a gleaming golden grand piano. Later in the night, Boone celebrated his victory as he was awarded Best New Act, underscoring his rising star status in the industry.
In a thrilling live debut, the K-pop sensation LE SSERAFIM electrified the audience with their performances of “Chasing Lightning” and “CRAZY,” the title track from their recent EP, which had topped Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart in September. Their dynamic presence showcased the growing global influence of K-pop and its ability to engage diverse audiences.
This five-member group, who made waves with their recent Coachella debut, received the Best Push Award, one of three nominations leading up to the event, highlighting their rapid ascent in the music world. Their recognition reflects the industry’s recognition of fresh talent and the impact of social media in promoting new artists.
Other standout performances included Shawn Mendes showcasing his new single “Heart of Gold,” while the Mexican trio The Warning delivered a raucous, pyrotechnic-enhanced rendition of “Automatic Sun.” Additionally, Raye, winner of Best U.K. and Ireland Act, captivated the crowd with a stirring medley accompanied by a 30-piece choir, featuring songs like “Escapism,” “Oscar Winning Tears,” and “Body Dysmorphia,” leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
Meanwhile, Peso Pluma, awarded Best Latin, joined forces with Estevan Plazola to deliver a powerful performance of their hit single collaboration “Hollywood,” showcasing the fusion of Latin sounds with contemporary music trends.
Busta Rhymes received the prestigious global icon award, a top honor previously awarded to legendary artists like Queen, Eminem, Janet Jackson, U2, and Whitney Houston. This recognition reflects his significant contributions to the music industry over decades, solidifying his legacy as a pioneering figure in hip-hop.
“After 34 years of professionally recording, this is the first time I’m receiving an award from MTV, and it feels absolutely incredible,” Rhymes remarked upon receiving the icon trophy from British rapper Little Simz. His heartfelt response highlighted the importance of recognition in an artist’s journey and the collective appreciation for their work.
The Brooklyn born rapper paid homage to one of his heroes, LL Cool J, who was present at the ceremony to present the awards, before treating the audience to a medley of his greatest hits. His performance included classics like “Scenario,” “Put Your Hands Where The Eyes Can See,” “Do The BusABus Pt.2,” “Break Ya Neck,” and “Pass The Courvoisier,” showcasing his enduring influence in the hip-hop genre.
“LL Cool J served as a template for my career,” Rhymes shared during an emotional eight-minute acceptance speech, where he thanked his mother and Public Enemy’s Chuck D for their early support. This gratitude highlights the importance of mentorship and inspiration in the music industry, as artists build their careers.
“I learned how to embody the essence of Busta Rhymes because my passion for hip-hop is genuine and profound,” he conveyed to the audience, emphasizing the authenticity that fuels his artistry and the connection he shares with his listeners.
“Busta Rhymes is a true creative visionary who has made a significant impact on the musical landscape and pop culture,” stated Bruce Gillmer, the event’s executive producer and president of music and chief content officer for music at Paramount+, in the lead-up to Sunday’s ceremony. This acknowledgment speaks to the artist’s wide-ranging influence beyond music, shaping cultural trends and societal narratives through his work.
The show also included playful nods to Manchester’s rich musical heritage, featuring the famous yellow and black striped branding of the iconic Hacienda nightclub and the recognizable opening riff of New Order’s “Blue Monday” that recurred throughout the evening, creating a nostalgic atmosphere for attendees.
Local band Blossoms made a brief appearance, humorously interacting with host Rita Ora as she served champagne in a bar-style setup. One of the more surreal moments of the night featured Ora engaging with legendary members of Happy Mondays, Shaun Ryder and Bez, who brought their characteristic spirited energy to the conversation, adding a touch of humor to the event.
In addition to commemorating the 30th anniversary of the MTV EMAs, which first took place in Berlin in 1994, Sunday’s event marked the return of the EMAs after a hiatus due to last year’s cancellation in Paris caused by global security concerns linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict. This return underscores the resilience of the music community in celebrating creativity and talent despite challenges.
The show concluded with a powerful performance by the Pet Shop Boys, who were accompanied by members of the Manchester Camerata orchestra, all donned in the band’s iconic cone hats. They delivered a stirring rendition of David Bowie’s “All The Young Dudes,” followed by their debut hit “West End Girls,” first released in 1984. This finale celebrated the enduring impact of music across generations and the connection it fosters within communities.
