Lzzy Hale’s Surprising Reason for Breaking Up After Tool Show

There are numerous valid and relatable reasons for ending a relationship, and according to Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale, dozing off during a Tool concert is certainly one of them. This humorous yet poignant observation highlights how crucial it is to share meaningful experiences with our partners, especially during significant events like concerts, where the energy and connection are paramount.

In a recent interview with Guitar Player magazine, published on January 3, Hale reflects on ten albums that profoundly influenced her music journey. Among these remarkable records is Tool’s third studio album, Lateralus, released in 2001. Hale shares a nostalgic moment: “My little brother, Arejay, was becoming a skilled drummer. He had learned the song ‘Schism’ from the radio, so I decided to gift him the entire album for his birthday. We immersed ourselves in it, and I found myself captivated by their sound. Listening to their music felt like experiencing a captivating horror film.”

She elaborates on a pivotal experience that underscores the significance of shared enthusiasm during concerts and how one man’s unfortunate blunder during the band’s performance led to the end of a budding romance:

I worked at a less-than-glamorous waitress job, and I managed to score tickets to see Tool at Hershey Park. I was beyond excited. However, my brother got into trouble with our parents, which meant he couldn’t join me. This unexpected change prompted me to consider asking someone out on a date, which I did with a guy named Nate. He happily accepted my invitation.

Even though our seats weren’t fantastic, it didn’t matter; the concert was incredible. I was singing every word with fervor. Yet, halfway through the performance, I glanced over at my date only to discover that he had fallen asleep. That was an absolute deal-breaker for me.

In a strange twist, Lateralus by Tool became a significant turning point in my life. My brother still jokes, saying, “I wouldn’t have fallen asleep.”

While many might not share the same enthusiasm for the metal quartet, a substantial number of fans would likely be just as dismayed by such a scenario. Regardless of the perspective, it is undeniably inconsiderate to fall asleep during a concert or on a date; doing both simultaneously amplifies the rudeness.

What are your thoughts on Hale’s perspective? Do you think she should have given her date another opportunity, or was her reaction justified? We would love to hear your opinions!

In related news, Halestorm is currently in the studio working on their next album, following the success of 2022’s Back from the Dead, as they prepare to join Iron Maiden on their 2025 “Run for Your Lives” world tour.

As for Tool, their epic two-part composition “Wings for Marie” from 2006’s 10,000 Days recently earned a spot on our list of the best “epic” songs by 11 prominent progressive metal bands!
