While discussing his experiences on THR?s Awards Chatter podcast, Chris revealed that the iconic aftershave scene featuring Macaulay gazing into the mirror was actually a ?complete accident.? This revelation highlights how sometimes, unplanned moments can lead to unforgettable cinematic experiences.
?The aftershave incident was scripted. However, part of it was purely accidental,? he explained. ?In the original direction, he was meant to apply the aftershave, touch his face, and then quickly pull his hands away to scream. That was the guidance I provided for the first take, but he surprisingly kept his hands there. The reason for this is a mystery to me.?
?Perhaps he was feeling nervous; he simply didn?t remove his hands from his cheeks, and it caused everyone to burst into laughter,? Chris continued. ?Typically, when the crew laughs, it indicates something isn?t funny, but in this case, the audience reaction during the first preview was overwhelmingly positive. So, it really was a happy accident.?
?It was Macaulay who made that moment work,? Chris clarified. ?Honestly, I?m not sure if he even remembers why he improvised that way, but I can?t take any credit for directing him to do that.? This highlights the importance of actor creativity in bringing scripts to life.
During the same podcast, Chris also discussed the financial background of the parents within the movie, explaining how they could afford such a sprawling and beautiful home. This detail adds depth to the characters and their lifestyle, making the story more relatable.
If you haven’t heard yet, earlier this month, Macaulay shared his three-year-old son?s intriguing theory about the movie, adding another layer of interest to the enduring legacy of Home Alone.
