Making Music for Netflix’s Harlan Coben Thriller ‘Missing You’

Netflix’s latest Harlan Coben adaptation, Missing You, has made a sensational debut, receiving rave reviews from both critics and audiences alike. The series was introduced with an unsettling trailer, enhanced by a haunting cover of Everything but the Girl‘s classic 1994 pop hit “Missing,” performed by the musical duo Dream A Lot. This talented pair, consisting of composer and producer Gus Crawford Collins and singer-songwriter Kim Hayden, recently shared insights with Collider about their creative journey on this project. They expressed their excitement about contributing to the trailer for this gripping new series, building on their previous collaboration for Coben’s Fool Me Once, where they delivered a powerful rendition of Christina Aguilera‘s “Fighter”:

“Working on the music for a Harlan Coben trailer is as thrilling as watching the show itself. We were immensely excited to have created the trailer music for ‘Fool Me Once,’ and with the mention of Harlan Coben, we knew this would be an incredibly exciting journey.”

The high-octane nature of Coben’s books provided ample inspiration for the duo as they elaborated on the creation of the accompanying video for their version of “Missing.” They described their process in depth:

“Being part of this franchise is a true honor for us, and creating the music is an exhilarating experience. We always approach the song with dark thriller elements at the forefront, using these as the foundation. We then weave in emotional and heartfelt moments, playing off what Harlan Coben does so brilliantly. Our aim is to keep the dynamic of the music constantly building towards epic, hard-hitting action moments.

Netflix excels at connecting a trailer to an emotional state of mind, never missing the mark when it comes to song selection. Having previously collaborated with the remarkable team on productions like ‘Fool Me Once’ and ‘Obsession,’ we felt this time we needed to push harder to deliver a strong connection for the audience between us as artists and the trailer’s song. We envisioned creating a music video for the release of ‘Missing You.’ Collaborating with top videographer Ronan Harding Downes on location was an incredibly creative and enjoyable experience. We were also thrilled to have renowned editor Autumn Rae Moore cut the video. Having previously worked with Autumn on the trailers for ‘Fool Me Once’ and ‘Obsession,’ we knew she was the perfect person for the job!”
