Editor’s note: The below contains spoilers for Matlock Episode 11.
The theme of honesty takes center stage in the latest episode of CBS’s popular series Matlock. In Episode 11, titled “A Traitor in Thine Own House,” Matty comes perilously close to having her true identity revealed, which compels her to weave even more intricate lies to safeguard her cover. After transferring the Autry case to Billy (David Del Rio) in Episode 10, Matty now faces the anger of Sarah (Leah Lewis), who feels slighted and believes that she is the superior attorney. In a bid for revenge, Sarah partners with the human lie detector Shae (Yael Grobglas), who has harbored suspicions about Matty from the very beginning. Together, they delve into Matty’s past, compelling her to summon reinforcements to shield her secrets. While Matty’s professional challenges create substantial tension, the emotional core of the episode revolves around her relationship with her husband, Edwin (Sam Anderson), who also harbors undisclosed secrets.
Matty and Edwin Confront a Human Lie Detector in ?Matlock? Episode 11
As Episode 10 culminates, Matty is compelled to favor Billy over Sarah to take charge of the Autry case, an effort to conceal her reasons for rummaging through Billy’s desk. In Episode 11, Sarah’s demeanor towards Matty remains frosty and detached, a fact that does not escape the notice of her boss, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), or Shae. Recognizing an opportunity, Shae confronts Sarah about her behavior towards Matty, leading them to form an alliance to unveil the truth about Matty’s real identity. Meanwhile, Matty’s trust in Shae is waning, particularly after discovering that Shae had an affair with Julian (Jason Ritter). Shae has also become a suspect in Matty’s mind regarding the Wellbrexa cover-up, escalating the tension as they are forced to collaborate.
Matty is well-acquainted with Shae’s icy gaze, but this time it disrupts her composure, particularly when she realizes that Shae and Sarah are investigating her history, including the law firm in Georgia listed on her resume. To further unsettle Matty, Shae intentionally leaves an article open on her laptop for Matty to discover, clearly indicating their investigative efforts. This tactic, coupled with Sarah observing Matty as she boards the bus to leave work, sends Matty spiraling into paranoia. On the verge of another panic attack, she turns to Edwin for solace, who calms her and devises a clever strategy to safeguard her. This strategy involves their grandson Alfie (Aaron Harris) creating a false article to mislead Shae into believing there is someone from Matty?s past who could expose her.
Fortunately, their scheme proves effective when Shae journeys to Georgia, anticipating a meeting with one of Matty’s “former colleagues.” However, she finds herself face-to-face with Edwin, who assumes the role of a Southern lawyer, enthusiastically praising Matty. The reveal of Edwin at this moment is not surprising, but his active participation signifies a shift in their relationship dynamics. Edwin has been grappling with his feelings about Matty?s job at Jacobson Moore ever since her last panic attack, so his decision to step in and engage with not just Matty’s work associates but also the human lie detector indicates a deepening involvement. He also uncovers critical information about Shae?s marketing background, leading them to speculate that her ties to the Wellbrexa case may relate to the marketing of the opioid drug. This finding clarifies why Senior (Beau Bridges) appears uneasy around Shae, even urging Matty not to file more complaints about the jury consultant. While it?s heartening to witness Matty and Edwin collaborating to gather evidence in pursuit of justice for their daughter, their evolving relationship hints at potential future drama within their marriage.

Edwin Unveils His Own Secrets in ‘Matlock’ Episode 11
Matlock has previously explored the tensions between Edwin and Matty, particularly concerning Alfie?s role in the case and their ongoing search for Alfie?s biological father. Edwin had pledged to track down an email sent by Ellie?s friend following her passing, but in the climactic moments of the episode, he confesses to Matty that he failed to locate it. Matty feels disheartened, assuming they have hit a dead end, but it soon comes to light that Edwin actually possesses the email on his phone and deliberately chose to deceive her about it. This mounting secrecy signals a potential widening rift between them that could lead to emotional heartbreak ? both for them and for the audience.
If Edwin becomes increasingly involved in assisting Matty while simultaneously concealing his own secrets, it could signify a pivotal moment in their marriage. Should he decide to launch an independent investigation to uncover Alfie’s biological father without Matty’s knowledge, it could jeopardize the fragile bond they have maintained, which has already been tested numerous times throughout the season. As a breakthrough in the Wellbrexa case looms, the critical question will be whether Matty is prepared to confront the truth, especially if the perpetrator turns out to be Olympia, the one individual Matty has convinced herself is uninvolved. Additionally, discovering Edwin?s secret actions behind her back could lead to significant turmoil, further complicating their personal lives and Matty’s efforts to keep her cover intact at work.
The narrative appears to be setting the stage for substantial emotional consequences for Matty and Edwin, which would be devastating for both them and the audience. The true test of their marriage will manifest when they realize they must depend on one another, particularly as the chaos and imminent threats at Jacobson Moore continue to escalate. They will need each other more than ever, not only to achieve the justice for Ellie that they have been tirelessly seeking but also to preserve the integrity of their family unit.
Matlock airs Thursdays at 9 PM on CBS. Episodes are available for streaming the following day on Paramount+.
