Midseason Premiere Images of Elsbeth Featuring a ‘Will & Grace’ Star

Elsbeth is set to make a thrilling return at the end of this month, and fans are eagerly awaiting the reveal of the special guest star for the winter premiere. According to TV Insider, Eric McCormack will feature prominently in Elsbeth Season 2, Episode 9, titled “Unalive and Well.” In this suspenseful episode, he portrays Tom Murphey, the enigmatic and potentially dangerous founder of a wellness center. This gripping installment is scheduled to air on Thursday, January 30, at 10 p.m. ET, following the exciting midseason premiere of the new drama series Matlock.

“When a young man is found dead in his car, Elsbeth visits the holistic wellness center he’d just left, and begins to suspect its charismatic founder.”

Promotional images reveal Elsbeth, played by Carrie Preston, navigating the intriguing atmosphere of the wellness center, where the founder seems to dominate the scene. One captivating image features him addressing attendees clad in what appears to be cult-like attire, suggesting a deeper, potentially darker undercurrent to the center’s practices. Another shot captures Elsbeth attempting to immerse herself in the program, channeling her inner Zen, yet struggling to maintain focus amid the peculiar environment. A third image showcases a tense exchange between Elsbeth, Officer Blanke (Cara Patterson), and Detective Smullen (Danny Mastrogiorgio) as they engage with Murphey, whose overly familiar demeanor leaves Elsbeth visibly uncomfortable. The nature of Murphey’s involvement in the young man’s death remains shrouded in mystery, adding layers of intrigue to the storyline.

The episode “Unalive and Well” follows closely after a significant exposé involving Elsbeth’s adversary, Judge Crawford (Michael Emerson). In this storyline, Elsbeth becomes embroiled in a tumultuous divorce scandal that threatens to disrupt her life and career. This scandal serves as a pivotal plot point that forces Elsbeth to confront her past in Chicago, revealing her motivations for her urgent departure to New York. Showrunner Jonathan Tolins provided insights to TV Insider about the escalating drama in the latter half of the season, stating,

“We’re finally filling in the full extent of what happened in Chicago. Elsbeth, her reputation will be jeopardized as will her friendship with Kaya (Carra Patterson). And so she’s going to be driven to make things right. And I think that’s because she’s such an empathetic person and just hates the idea of having been a party to the victimization of an innocent person in Chicago. She’s not going to rest until she makes things right.”

Tolins further elaborated that the Van Ness divorce scandal presents formidable challenges for Elsbeth. However, she has cultivated strong relationships with characters such as Officer Blanke and Captain Wagner (Wendell Pierce), which will prove crucial as she seeks to navigate these treacherous waters. “Fortunately, we’re now at a point where the people she works with regularly know her and love her, ’cause it’s impossible not to love her after a certain point. They’re going to be helpful to try to figure a way out of this,” he affirmed, hinting at the collaborative efforts that will unfold to resolve the unfolding chaos.
