‘Nosferatu’ Secures Third Place on Top Domestic Box Office List
It hasn’t taken long for the horror film Nosferatu to emerge as a significant box office success. Premiering during the highly lucrative Christmas season, the film has strategically offered a compelling alternative in a market saturated with family-friendly options such as Moana 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Mufasa: The Lion King. Nosferatu has rapidly become the highest-grossing film in the career of acclaimed director Robert Eggers, achieving this remarkable milestone just days after its release. It is now recognized as one of the top-grossing films in the history of Focus Features, a distributor renowned for its thoughtful dramas and occasional horror titles.
With over $82 million in domestic earnings, Nosferatu is well on its way to surpassing the impressive $100 million mark. This milestone has been reached by only two other horror films released in 2024, namely A Quiet Place: Day One and Alien: Romulus. However, it could be argued that neither of these films, which prominently feature science-fiction elements, can be considered as pure horror compared to Nosferatu. This film serves as a remake of the iconic F.W. Murnau classic from over a century ago. Recently, Nosferatu surpassed the similarly celebrated art-house horror film Longlegs, positioning itself to become Focus Features’ third-largest domestic release of all time, a feat it may achieve as soon as today.
Currently, Nosferatu sits approximately $400,000 away from surpassing Brokeback Mountain, the critically acclaimed drama from director Ang Lee, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger. The top two highest-grossing films from Focus Features include Downton Abbey, which earned $96 million domestically, and Coraline, which achieved $116 million, bolstered significantly by a recent re-release. Nosferatu is poised to surpass Downton Abbey within a few days, although overtaking Coraline will depend on its continued performance. Regardless, it is expected to finish its theatrical run as one of the top two highest-grossing titles from Focus Features. Currently, with $136 million accumulated, it ranks ninth on the distributor’s global chart, trailing behind Darkest Hour at $150 million and Johnny English Strikes Again at $159 million.
