In a candid reflection on his illustrious career, Phil Collins revealed that he doesn’t consider himself the biggest enthusiast of Genesis, despite his pivotal role as both the drummer and later the lead singer of the legendary band. In the recently released documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First, produced by Drumeo, he takes a deep dive into his musical journey and personal experiences.

The 73-year-old artist was prompted to encapsulate his life and career, expressing mixed feelings about his time with Genesis. “I’m not Genesis’ biggest fan, you know,” he shares candidly, noting that while there are elements of their music he treasures, there are also parts he feels less enthusiastic about. “There’s stuff that I like, stuff I’m proud of – [but also] stuff that [I’m] less so. Sometimes it can be like people throwing bricks at you,” he elaborates.

Despite his reservations, Collins emphasizes the enjoyable experiences he had with the band throughout his career. “I’ve been playing drums since I was 5 – there’s gonna be dogs! There’s gonna be stuff you enjoy hearing back, and others not so,” he states, reflecting on the highs and lows of his musical endeavors.

In another revealing moment from the documentary, Collins identifies “Down and Out” as his least favorite Genesis track. This song, from the band’s 1978 album … And Then There Were Three …, marked a significant shift in their musical style following guitarist Steve Hackett‘s exit from the group.
