Ozzy’s Role in Breaking a Baseball World Record

Did you know that the legendary Ozzy Osbourne once orchestrated an unforgettable event that led a baseball stadium to break a Guinness World Record? This extraordinary moment is a testament to his rock star persona and the unique ways he celebrates his musical achievements.

While many artists typically choose to mark the release of a new album in a more subdued manner, perhaps with intimate gatherings of friends and family, Ozzy Osbourne opted for a much grander approach. When he launched his 11th solo album, Scream, in June 2010, he took the opportunity to engage a whopping 50,000 baseball enthusiasts, turning the occasion into a historic attempt to shatter the Guinness World Record for the loudest and longest recorded scream ever.

The thrilling record-breaking attempt unfolded on June 11, 2010, at the iconic Dodger Stadium, during the fifth inning of a thrilling game featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels. This monumental event was branded as Scream for a Cure!, with proceeds directed towards ThinkCure!, an initiative dedicated to advancing cancer research. The cause was particularly meaningful for the Osbourne family, as Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife and manager, had bravely battled colon cancer since her diagnosis in 2002.

Facing formidable competition, Osbourne was determined to make history. At that time, the record for the loudest outdoor scream was held by a group of Finnish Scouts, who achieved a remarkable 127.2 dBA scream in Siilinjarvi, Finland, on April 16, 2005. Undeterred by this challenge, Ozzy encouraged the audience with his infectious energy. “Okay, when we start this countdown from ’10’ to ‘1,’ I want to hear you all shout — scream!” he proclaimed, rallying the crowd. He then joined nearly 52,000 fans in a powerful scream that extended for over a minute, showcasing his years of experience in engaging with large audiences, urging them with his iconic calls of “Let me hear you!” and “Louder!”

Did Ozzy Osbourne Successfully Break the World Record?

In the end, the jubilant announcer declared that Ozzy Osbourne and the enthusiastic crowd at Dodger Stadium had indeed set the Guinness World Record for the longest scream by an outdoor audience. However, this record was later eclipsed by the Drayton Manor Theme Park in Tamworth, Staffordshire, U.K., on April 12, 2014. Meanwhile, the Guinness World Records website continues to credit the Finnish Scouts with the distinction of having the loudest scream from an outdoor crowd.

Regardless of the outcome, the event proved to be a wildly entertaining and unconventional way to celebrate the release of Scream. The album made quite an impact, debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, and its lead single “Let Me Hear You Scream” achieved the top spot on the Mainstream Rock chart, giving Ozzy even more reasons to celebrate.
