Until earlier this year, I had not experienced the joy of the Paddington films, but with the upcoming release of Paddington in Peru, I decided to dive into this beloved series. The second film has garnered immense praise from critics and even received a shout-out from Pedro Pascal in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. After being captivated by director Paul King’s recent work on Wonka, I was eager to see what all the fuss was about. Thankfully, Paddington 2 lives up to every bit of the hype. Having revisited it through the stunning new 4K release from Warner Bros., I can confidently say it remains an absolute delight to watch.

The plot of Paddington 2 is as charming as its titular character. Now comfortably living with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens, Paddington has become a cherished figure in the community, spreading joy and, of course, marmalade. In a quest to find the perfect gift for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, Paddington discovers a unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop. His determination leads him to take on a variety of odd jobs to afford it. However, when the book is stolen, Paddington and the Browns embark on a thrilling adventure to uncover the mystery and catch the thief. The synopsis brilliantly encapsulates the magic of the film.

Having been enchanted by the original Paddington, I found that the sequel builds upon its predecessor’s foundation, infusing even more heart and humor into the story. A standout element is the fantastic performance by Hugh Grant, who portrays the charmingly villainous Phoenix Buchanan. Additionally, Brendan Gleeson shines in a memorable role, particularly during a lengthy and entertaining prison sequence. The talented Ben Whishaw and the incredible visual effects team also do an extraordinary job of bringing Paddington to life, making him one of the most lovable characters to ever grace the silver screen. If you disagree, just know you might receive a stern look from me.

There’s an abundance of delightful elements in this film, particularly evident in its stunning 4K presentation with HDR. It utilizes the same transfer as StudioCanal’s collection in the UK. One aspect that truly resonated with me is the film’s strong sense of community. Director Paul King cleverly weaves in familiar faces from the first film, showcasing how Paddington has become an integral part of his neighborhood. When Paddington finds himself in prison, the impact of his absence is felt deeply, illustrating how he has transformed neighbors into friends. This film offers an aspirational message: the world would be a better place if we all helped one another, much like our well-meaning bear.

The Paddington 2 4K release not only excites with its visual fidelity but also boasts an impressive array of bonus content. Every feature from the Blu-ray edition is included, offering fans a wealth of material to explore. Among these extras is an engaging commentary track by Paul King, who shares captivating stories from the filming process and emphasizes the collaborative nature of making Paddington feel authentically alive on screen. Additionally, there are seven engaging videos, including a delightful instructional segment on how to craft the perfect marmalade sandwich—I can’t wait to try that recipe! The bonus features also shine a spotlight on the impressive performances of Grant and Gleeson.

The Paddington 2 4K release is an unequivocal recommendation for anyone seeking quality family entertainment. This film stands tall as one of the finest family films of the 21st century. Boasting Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, it presents vibrant visuals in stunning ultra-high definition. Moreover, it retains all the engaging bonus features from its previous release. Upgrading to this version comes with no downsides; it’s undoubtedly the best edition of the film available for audiences in the United States.
