Indie rock enthusiasts and devoted fans of Pavement are eagerly anticipating the release of the band’s first new track in 25 years. This much-awaited comeback marks a significant milestone for a group that has left an indelible mark on the alternative music scene and continues to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners alike.

Pavement, the iconic California-based band, originally made waves from 1989 until their split in 1999. Over this decade, they blessed the music world with five critically acclaimed albums, including the landmark 1992 release Slanted and Enchanted and the 1994 hit Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Their 1997 album, Brighten the Corners, achieved notable success, reaching No. 70 on the Billboard 200, solidifying their status as a staple in the indie rock genre.

The band’s initial breakup in November 1999 followed the release of the final original material in the form of the Major Leagues EP. Since their hiatus, all members have remained busy with various musical endeavors, including a series of reissues that have delighted fans by introducing previously unreleased and rare tracks, showcasing the band’s enduring legacy and creative spirit.

Although Pavement reunited for a tour in 2010, they took another break before announcing a second reunion in 2019. Unfortunately, these anticipated tour dates faced delays, and the band’s latest performance occurred in October this year, coinciding with the New York premiere of Alex Ross Perry’s innovative biopic/documentary, Pavements. This event marked an emotional moment for fans and the band alike, shedding light on their enduring impact on the music industry.

Initially introduced at the Venice International Film Festival in September, Pavements is now gearing up for a broader release that promises to captivate audiences. In a recent interview on the Kreative Kontrol podcast, Pavement’s Scott ‘Spiral Stairs’ Kannberg joined host Vish Khanna, along with Perry and producer/editor Robert Greene, to discuss the film. During this conversation, Kannberg provided insights into the upcoming soundtrack, hinting at the inclusion of a new track from Pavement. This revelation stirred anticipation among listeners eager for fresh material from the beloved band.

“There will be a new Pavement song on the soundtrack; that’s all I’m going to give you,” Kannberg teased. “I just heard a mix of it today, and it sounds fantastic. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s exciting because it offers something different, and it’s a song that we all genuinely enjoyed performing.” This statement indicates a return to their roots, reigniting the passion that has always defined their music.

Kannberg revealed that this unnamed track originated during the recent reunion rehearsals. However, setlists from those performances suggest it didn’t make it onto any show, leaving fans eager for its debut. The anticipation for this unreleased gem adds to the excitement surrounding Pavement’s resurgence in the music scene.

As of now, the official status of Pavement remains uncertain. Their recent New York show concluded with percussionist/vocalist Bob Nastanovich informing the audience that it would be their “last performance for a long time.” Meanwhile, vocalist and guitarist Stephen Malkmus has embarked on live performances as part of an indie supergroup called The Hard Quartet, collaborating with members of Chavez and the Dirty Three, indicating that while the future of Pavement may be unclear, their influence and creativity continue to thrive across the indie music landscape.
