This series will mark a significant celebration, commemorating both the semicentennial of My Melody (50 years) and the vicennial of Kuromi (20 years), making it a special event for all Sanrio enthusiasts.
Here’s an engaging synopsis: “Prepare for an enchanting journey as My Melody & Kuromi brings these iconic Sanrio characters to life through a delightful stop-motion animation series, set to premiere in July 2025. This series not only celebrates the 50th anniversary of My Melody but also the 20th anniversary of Kuromi, whisking viewers away to Mariland, their magical and whimsical home. A special sneak peek showcases the characters in their irresistibly adorable stop-motion form — they’re so cute you’ll be tempted to reach out and touch them!”
“My Melody embodies a straightforward and cheerful personality, deeply caring for her younger brother. She loves to bake cookies alongside her mother, which forms a core part of her character. Since her introduction in 1975, she has captured the hearts of a diverse range of fans. Kuromi, who made her debut in 2005 as My Melody’s self-proclaimed rival, may give off a mischievous vibe, but she possesses a distinct femininity. She has become one of the most beloved characters, consistently ranking in the Top 3 of the 2024 Sanrio character rankings.”
Director Tomoki Misato expressed his excitement: “I’m elated that we can finally announce this project during such a significant year, celebrating the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi! This monumental project inspired all of us to collaborate, face various challenges, and innovate within the realm of stop-motion. Screenwriter Shuko Nemoto reflected on her experience: “Hearing My Melody and Kuromi deliver lines I wrote felt like an incredible reward as a writer. Due to the pandemic, I was unable to meet with Director Misato or the production team in person. However, we maintained a weekly remote connection, carefully bringing this project to life together. Filled with affection for the world of My Melody, this series resonates with people of all ages. I genuinely believe that everyone, from adults to children, will find their favorite scenes and memorable lines.”
