From the very first moments of the three-part series premiere, the narrative has hinted at the future paths of young David (Michael Iskander) and King Saul (Ali Suliman). Following Samuel’s (Stephen Lang) prophetic messages, King Saul has been haunted by ominous visions that extend to his son, Jonathan (Ethan Kai). These eerie glimpses into the future raise critical questions: Are these visions mere torments from a demonic spirit, or are they vital warnings that both the king and prince must heed? To uncover the truth, we’ve turned to the biblical texts for deeper insights.

Exploring the Ominous Visions of Saul and Jonathan: A Glimpse into Their Inevitable Demise

The moment the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, he was thrust into the darkness of a demonic spirit, leading him to envision a grim future where both he and Jonathan meet their end in battle. This reality is not only troubling for the king, who is already under immense pressure due to losing favor and knowing that Samuel has anointed another king, but it also disturbs his mental state. These haunting visions drive Saul to the brink of madness, making it increasingly difficult for him to distinguish between reality and his chaotic thoughts. Meanwhile, in the sixth episode titled “Giants Awakened,” Jonathan attempts to uncover the truth behind his father’s dire condition, only to find himself receiving a vision that eerily mirrors his father’s. Samuel ominously informs Jonathan that these events could come to fruition, leaving both characters in a state of uncertainty. For viewers unfamiliar with the biblical narrative, this foreshadowing hints at a tragic fate depicted in the concluding chapters of the First Book of Samuel, a significant component from which much of Season 1 derives.

In 1 Samuel chapter 31 and 1 Chronicles chapter 10, we find Saul, Jonathan, and several of Saul’s other sons—who notably do not appear in House of David—facing the Philistine army in a fierce battle on Mount Gilboa. The conflict turns disastrous, resulting in Jonathan’s swift death and Saul suffering grave injuries from Philistine archers, reminiscent of the tragic death of Boromir in The Lord of the Rings. At the cusp of death, Saul implores his armor-bearer to end his life, unwilling to face the humiliation of being captured by the enemy. When his servant refuses, Saul takes matters into his own hands, choosing to “fall on his own sword.” This brutal act is followed by the Philistines desecrating his body, stripping him of his armor and displaying his severed head as a trophy. Such a harrowing depiction is one that David grapples with upon receiving the news of their demise.

Indications suggest that the visions experienced by Saul and Jonathan may be foreshadowing this very tragic moment. The nighttime setting of their vision obscures the identity of their enemies, but the context strongly implies the Philistines are the aggressors. Notably, both Saul and Jonathan are shown as wounded by arrows, teetering on the edge of death—a fate that aligns closely with the biblical account. However, it’s vital to recognize that while House of David appears to allude to this specific event, it does not guarantee that the narrative will unfold in the exact manner we anticipate. Samuel’s words to Jonathan indicate that these foreseen events may not necessarily come to pass, providing a glimmer of hope for the young prince.

How Saul and Jonathan’s Visions Shape Their Choices in ‘House of David’

The series House of David seems to present these visions with a significant purpose. Given the show’s history of incorporating various biblical narratives and conveying profound theological themes in relatable ways, it’s plausible that these shared visions serve as a divine warning rather than a malevolent plot orchestrated by the Devil. It is clear from the narrative that the evil spirit afflicting Saul was sent as a consequence of his disobedience in failing to eliminate King Agag (Jeremy Xido) in the episode “A Shepherd and a King.” Additionally, it is revealed to Jonathan in “Giants Awakened” that Saul has been rejected by God due to his transgressions. Nevertheless, the prophet Samuel maintains that there is still a chance for Saul to amend his ways. Acknowledging his faults and stepping down from his throne might be the key to averting the fate depicted in these ominous visions—something that Jonathan fervently hopes for.

Moreover, according to the biblical account, Saul’s demise is self-inflicted. Though gravely wounded during the skirmish, he does not succumb to his injuries as the visions might suggest. Instead, in a moment of despair, fearing the brutality the Philistines might unleash upon him, he chooses to fall on his own sword. Some biblical scholars interpret this act as the ultimate expression of Saul’s faithlessness towards God. Despite the hopes of both Samuel and Jonathan, Saul’s torment from these visions may only drive him to cling more tightly to his power, ultimately positioning him in direct conflict with David. However, Jonathan’s character has shown that he is willing to relinquish his birthright without hesitation, choosing to follow God’s will over his own ambitions.

The tragic arc of King Saul’s story is a compelling reminder of the consequences of turning away from divine guidance. As depicted in House of David, Saul’s irrational and ruthless behavior continues to escalate. He has called off his daughter’s wedding in “The Wolf and The Lion” and has come dangerously close to killing Jonathan in a fit of rage. His recent addition of Besai’s (Eden Saban) potion—coupled with his apprehension towards his formidable adversaries—underscores his declining mental state. Yet, he continues to experience these foreboding visions, seemingly intended as warnings. It will be intriguing to see how Jonathan navigates this knowledge moving forward, particularly if awareness of the fate awaiting him and his father influences his decisions as a warrior prince.
