Scream 7: Kevin Williamson Kicks Off Filming Day
Scream 7 has officially entered production with an anticipated release date in 2026. Director Kevin Williamson has taken to social media to express his excitement about the project. Fans can expect thrilling new developments as the film takes shape under his direction.
Initially, Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures had plans for a Scream 7 featuring the stars of Scream (2022) and Scream VI</em), Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Christopher Landon directing. However, after Ortega reportedly requested a significant pay increase, complications arose—similar to the pay dispute that led to Neve Campbell exiting Scream VI. Following these events, Barrera was dismissed from the project due to comments about the Israel-Hamas conflict, which did not sit well with the studio. Shortly thereafter, Landon also stepped down. The film has since been restructured, with Campbell returning as the iconic Sidney Prescott. Williamson, the original Scream screenwriter, is now directing this new installment based on a screenplay by Guy Busick, who co-wrote the previous two films alongside James Vanderbilt, a producer on the latest sequels. Scream 7 is scheduled to hit theaters on February 27, 2026, with filming currently in progress. After the first day wrapped up, Williamson celebrated on social media, sharing his joy.
In a heartfelt post showcasing a Scream 7 clapperboard, Williamson expressed, “I’m not supposed to post about Scream and I hope Spyglass and Paramount will forgive me but when you have one of the best days of your life, it’s really hard to keep it to yourself. What an extraordinary day I had working with an amazing and talented cast and crew. They brought their ‘A’ game and had my back every step of the way. I’m so very grateful for this opportunity and to Wes Craven who was on my mind through it all. The profound impact he has had on my life and career is endless. What a day! I can’t wait for tomorrow!“
Beyond his work on the original Scream, Williamson is also known for crafting scripts for popular films such as I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, The Faculty, and Halloween H20, though some of these contributions were uncredited. He penned early drafts for Scream 3 and Scream 4, both of which underwent substantial rewrites. His directorial debut came with the 1999 thriller Teaching Mrs. Tingle. With Scream 7, Williamson will mark his second time helming a feature film.
Returning alongside Neve Campbell are several talented actors, including Isabel May, known for her role in the Yellowstone prequel 1883, who will portray Sidney’s daughter. The cast also features Mckenna Grace from the Ghostbusters franchise, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann from Gen V, Sam Rechner from The Fabelmans, Anna Camp from Pitch Perfect, franchise veteran Courteney Cox reprising her role as reporter Gale Weathers, and Mason Gooding, returning as Chad Meeks-Martin. There have been discussions about Patrick Dempsey reprising his role as Detective Mark Kincaid from Scream 3, but it remains unclear whether he has finalized a deal.
