Step-by-Step Guide to Initiate The Secret Of Giants Quest
Uncovering the Mystery of Father Crescenzo
Your initial encounter with the “The Secret of Giants” Fieldwork quest begins during the main storyline, specifically within the quest titled “The Stolen Cat Mummy.” When you arrive at the Vatican, you’ll venture into some ancient underground ruins alongside Father Antonio. This segment of the game is fairly straightforward; simply follow the designated pathway, swim through the grotto, and utilize your whip to open a gate. Inside, Antonio will discover the skeletal remains of Father Crescenzo, alongside his journal, which reveals his obsessive search for the cryptic inscriptions hidden throughout the Vatican. This step is unmissable, so continue progressing through the main storyline until you reach this pivotal moment.
Completing this key main quest step will also unlock an additional Fieldwork quest, titled “The Mad Priest.” To initiate this quest, simply speak with Sister Catherine located in the Sistine Chapel.
After this revelation, Antonio will ask you as part of the main quest to return with photographs of four inscriptions found throughout the city. While this task technically exists outside the direct scope of “The Secret of Giants,” it is essential for unlocking the quest. Utilizing Father Crescenzo’s map, Indy will mark the locations of these inscriptions, prompting you to venture out and begin your search.
Acquiring the Camera for Inscriptions
However, before you can embark on your search for the inscriptions, you must first obtain a camera. Antonio specifically requests photographic evidence of the inscriptions you discover, and he advises that his contact at the Vatican Post Office can assist with this. Navigate to the marked location on your map to speak with Ernesto, who will offer to sell you a camera for 379 lire. If your funds are insufficient, consider exploring nearby Blackshirt outposts or completing various side quests to gather resources. Participating in the Vatican boxing ring can also be a lucrative opportunity to earn some prize money. With time and effort, you’ll be able to save enough to purchase the camera from Ernesto.
With the camera secured, you’re now prepared to embark on your quest for the inscriptions. Although these inscriptions can be elusive and challenging to find, they are all marked on shield-shaped seals, making them easier to identify once you locate the first one. Your goal is to find four of these inscriptions and then return to Antonio to advance in the main quest and unlock “The Secret of Giants.” Ultimately, you will need to locate all ten inscriptions and progress further in the main storyline to successfully complete the Fieldwork quest. From this point onward, you have the freedom to collect the inscriptions in any order, and we will provide guidance when specific tasks or key items are required for certain inscriptions.
Comprehensive Guide: Locating All The Secret Of Giants Inscriptions
Inscription #1: Discovering the Post Office Alley Inscription
The first inscription is conveniently located just around the corner, within a small alley adjacent to the Post Office. To access this area, you will need to complete the quest titled “A Savage Discovery” to acquire the necessary key for entering the basement.
If you find yourself struggling to capture the perfect angle, try moving around and adjusting the zoom on your camera until the two squares on the camera’s interface align perfectly.
Proceed down the stairs and enter through the open door of the dimly lit room. You will find the inscription on the wall to your immediate right upon entering.
Inscription #2: Unlocking the Belvedere Courtyard Garden Inscription
Next, head towards the Belvedere Courtyard from the eastern side, and locate a gate leading into a smaller garden area filled with tall hedges. Walk through this gate (it should be unlocked), and navigate to the northeastern corner to spot another inscription situated above a beautiful fountain.
Inscription #3: Finding the Belvedere Courtyard Fountain Inscription
To continue your quest, enter the main section of the Belvedere Courtyard, which is located at the center of the Vatican map. Stroll around the grand fountain that dominates this area to discover another inscription located on the northern side, specifically on the inner base of the fountain.
Inscription #4: Fountain of Confession Inscription Location
For this particular inscription, make your way to the Fountain of Confession, located on the western side of the map. You might need to employ some stealth to navigate this area if you haven’t yet acquired the Blackshirt Uniform required to access the boxing ring. Climb the stairs to the east of the fountain to uncover a smaller fountain that features a seal and an inscription right above it.
Inscription #5: Excavation Site Inscription Discovery
Another inscription can be found within the Excavation Site, situated just off the Apostolic Palace. This expansive area is teeming with Blackshirts, and you have two options: either take your time to clear out the adversaries or wait until you are engaged in the quest “The Mad Priest,” which will provide access to a secret side entrance that lets you bypass most of the enemies.

Regardless of your approach, you’ll need to stealthily navigate through the Excavation Site, avoiding the Blackshirts that are patrolling the area, while you search for the inscription located in the northwestern corner. Utilize the vertical layout of the site to your advantage, as the Blackshirts often patrol higher ground, allowing you to drop into the dig site for ample cover.
Inscription #6: Rooftops Inscription Location
To locate this inscription, you must access the upper levels of the Apostolic Palace. You can do this by either exploring the structure naturally or by climbing up the scaffolding located behind the stage in the central courtyard. Once you find yourself in the room containing the House of God puzzle box mystery, jump out of the window onto the rooftops above the south-central courtyard. Move to the right, and use your whip to reach the higher rooftop where the next inscription is waiting for you on your left.
Inscription #7: Behind The Stage Inscription Discovery
Navigate to the central courtyard of the Vatican map and direct your gaze south towards the prominent banner of Mussolini and the half-constructed stage. Walk around the perimeter of the stage until you discover a bit of scaffolding that can be climbed. At the very top, leap onto the adjacent balcony and turn right to reveal the next inscription tucked away in a corner.
Inscription #8: Sewers Inscription Location
To uncover this inscription, you must progress through the “The Mad Priest” sidequest until the sewers become accessible. From the entrance point, utilize ledges and your whip to climb upwards until you finally reach the inscription, positioned according to the map reference provided.
Inscription #9: Hidden Alcove Inscription Discovery
Continue advancing through the main storyline until you find a way to access the wooden double doors located in an alcove off the southern road. Ascend the stairs leading up to the roof, crouch, and maneuver through the hole in the fence, then rappel down into the lower area, which is home to numerous Blackshirts and the penultimate inscription.
Inscription #10: Apostolic Library Courtyard Inscription Location
For the final inscription, you will need to initiate the Fieldwork quest named “A Nun In Trouble” and progress through it until you gain access to the museum wing of the Apostolic Library. Once you arrive at the adjacent courtyard, simply ascend the stairs in the northwestern corner to discover the last inscription.
Once you have collected all ten inscriptions, return to Antonio’s office and interact with the poster board situated next to his desk to submit all your photographs. In reward for your efforts, he will hand you one of the Ancient Relics that can be found throughout the Vatican, and you will also unlock an achievement called The Path of Junia for successfully completing “The Secret of Giants” in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
