Seven of Nine Spinoff: Jeri Ryan Declines Role
Following the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard, actress Jeri Ryan was offered a chance to lead a Seven of Nine spinoff series, but she ultimately decided against it.
While the initial two seasons of Star Trek: Picard received mixed reactions from viewers, the third season successfully delivered the essence that fans had yearned for since the beginning. This season also set the stage for a potential Star Trek spinoff that would have featured Seven of Nine (played by Jeri Ryan) taking command as the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise G. The showrunner, Terry Matalas, referred to this exciting new project as Star Trek: Legacy. Unfortunately, Paramount decided not to proceed with this concept. During a discussion at Spacecon, Ryan revealed that she had been pitched a different spinoff series, which she ultimately declined to pursue.
“There has been talk. And there was an idea that was actually pitched to me after Picard ended, which was not the Legacy show that I know the fans are asking for, that I want to do,” Ryan explained. “But it just wasn’t me… It didn’t feel like the right kind of thing… But there has been talk. And if there is one thing I have learned with this franchise it is: never say never. You never know.“
The specifics of this other proposed Star Trek spinoff remain unclear, yet many fans feel that Paramount missed a significant opportunity by not greenlighting Star Trek: Legacy. Additionally, the franchise has lost Terry Matalas, who has recently been appointed as the showrunner for the upcoming Vision series under the Marvel banner.
Even though Star Trek: Legacy may not come to fruition, there are still numerous Star Trek projects to anticipate. The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks has commenced streaming on Paramount+. Also, fans can look forward to the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, set to debut in 2025, with a fourth season already confirmed. Additionally, Star Trek: Section 31 is on the horizon, representing the first streaming film in the franchise. Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role as Philippa Georgiou, who joins Section 31, a covert division of Starfleet dedicated to safeguarding the United Federation of Planets while confronting her past mistakes. This exciting film is scheduled to premiere on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025.
There’s also a brand-new Star Trek series currently in the works, titled Starfleet Academy. This series, set in the 32nd century, will follow the first new class of Starfleet cadets in over a century as they navigate their coming-of-age journey and prepare to become officers. The project boasts impressive star power, featuring Holly Hunter as the head of Starfleet Academy, and Paul Giamatti will finally get his chance to embrace his Star Trek ambitions by portraying the main antagonist. The series has already secured a renewal for a second season, with Tatiana Maslany joining the cast to further enrich the storyline.
