Smallville Animated Series Update from Tom Welling
Tom Welling has provided an exciting update regarding the long-anticipated Smallville animated series, a project he first brought to light over three years ago. Fans of the beloved series have been eagerly awaiting news, and this latest development sheds some light on the current status of the potential revival. As the animation industry continues to grow, the idea of revisiting such iconic characters in a new format has generated significant buzz among the fanbase, making it a hot topic in the world of television adaptations.
In the past three years since Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum first hinted at the possibility of an animated sequel to Smallville, there has been a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Fans were thrilled by the prospect of seeing their favorite characters return in a fresh format, but as time has passed, it appears that the project has hit a snag. Currently, it is awaiting crucial approval from Warner Bros., which is a significant hurdle in bringing this vision to life. The anticipation surrounding this series highlights the enduring legacy of Smallville and the desire for more stories from that universe.
During a recent conversation with TVLine, Welling expressed his frustration about the situation, stating, “The honest answer is we have not been able to get Warner Bros. to give us the thumbs-up. We need their permission.” He elaborated on the lack of response, saying, “We haven’t even gotten a response!” Welling acknowledged that the animated series originated as a “more of a fan-driven idea” which may not present a “financial windfall” for the studio. He concluded with optimism, wishing that the project could move forward, stating, “We all like each other, we all like working together, and if we could do it, it’d be fun,” emphasizing the camaraderie among the cast and crew.
The vision for the animated series includes the hope of reuniting much of the original cast, along with the co-creators of Smallville, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. However, it is anticipated that some cast members, like Allison Mack, may not return, given the current circumstances. This potential reunion of the original talent showcases the dedication of the creators to honor the legacy of the show while introducing new content that resonates with both old and new audiences.
Earlier this year, Michael Rosenbaum shared his perspective on the animated series update, expressing a more optimistic outlook on its potential realization. He stated, “All I could share is that it’s a great idea. We have Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar], the creators of Smallville backing us up. When it’s the right time, we’d like to go and do this; pitch to Warner Bros.” Rosenbaum emphasized the importance of timing, remarking, “It has to be the right time, and right now is not the right time.” He optimistically added, “When the time’s right, I think it’s something that’s a no brainer, unless they have other ideas. We’d like to do it — the whole cast would like to do it. They would voice their own character from the show, and we have a concept of what the show is.” His enthusiasm suggests that there is still hope for the project to move forward.
Smallville captivated audiences for ten seasons, chronicling the formative years of Clark Kent as he navigates his budding superpowers while striving to protect his friends and family in his small hometown. The series not only defined a generation of superhero storytelling but also laid the groundwork for future adaptations of comic book characters, proving that character-driven narratives resonate deeply with viewers.
