The Criterion Collection is opening its extensive vaults to unveil a remarkable lineup of 4K Blu-rays featuring some iconic genre classics that have left a lasting impact on cinema. This release not only highlights the art of filmmaking but also showcases the evolution of the genre, making it an exciting time for both collectors and film enthusiasts alike.

The Criterion Collection has officially announced its highly anticipated June 2025 releases, a lineup brimming with tension-filled suspense, themes of bureaucratic domination, and the unique vision of Sidney Lumet as seen in The Wiz. This month’s offerings are sure to excite fans of cinema, as they feature films that not only entertain but also provoke thought and discussion among viewers.
One of the standout releases scheduled for June is William Friedkin’s Sorcerer, a captivating remake of The Wages of Fear. Initially a box office disappointment, this film has since garnered acclaim as one of the best thrillers of the 1970s. Notably, this is the first time Friedkin’s work will be featured in The Criterion Collection, with this release marked as spine #1267. It boasts an impressive new 4K digital restoration, along with a wealth of special features such as a feature-length documentary on Friedkin from 2018, several archival interviews, behind-the-scenes clips, and more. Sorcerer is set to hit the shelves on June 24th.
Another exciting title debuting this June is The Wiz, which reimagines the beloved Broadway classic and the iconic The Wizard of Oz. This film, featuring an all-star cast including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Nipsey Russell, was nominated for four Academy Awards and stands out as one of Lumet’s most distinctive works. With its vibrant musical numbers, it is one of the few musicals featured in The Criterion Collection. The release will include a new audio commentary along with archival interviews, though many believe it deserves even more extensive bonus content. This marks Lumet’s fourth film in the collection, following The Fugitive Kind, 12 Angry Men, and Fail Safe. You can grab your copy on June 10th.
This June also sees Terry Gilliam’s visionary film Brazil making a return. Originally released by Criterion on LaserDisc, it became an official spine in 1999 and still holds the number #51. This latest release features a Gilliam-approved 4K restoration of the director’s cut, alongside the controversial “Love Conquers All” version, which provides a more upbeat conclusion to the story. The release will maintain its original cover art, reminiscent of the film’s poster. Fans can look forward to adding this classic to their collection on June 3rd.
In addition to these major titles, The Criterion Collection is also re-releasing several noteworthy films this June, including Paul Schrader’s Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (spine #432) with a 4K restoration, the insightful 1988 documentary Thelonious Monk Straight, No Chaser (#1265), the classic screwball comedy featuring Claudette Colbert and Don Ameche, Midnight (#1266), and Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (#1268). Each of these films brings its own unique perspective and artistic flair, enriching the Criterion Collection’s offerings.
