In response to swirling internet rumors about his potential collaboration on a Van Halen-related project, Toto guitarist Steve Lukather has taken the opportunity to clarify the situation. He emphasized that there has been a significant misunderstanding regarding his involvement with the band’s legacy.
On his Instagram account, Lukather stated, “Ever since Alex Van Halen mentioned that we were going to work together, I think there is a huge misunderstanding. I will NOT EVER play a guitar note on a VH song ever!” This declaration aims to dispel the misconceptions surrounding his role in any upcoming projects associated with the legendary band.
The rumors gained traction after the Dutch newspaper De Telegraf reported that Alex Van Halen personally approached Lukather to assist in finalizing previously unreleased Van Halen material. According to the publication, Alex stated, “Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and they often worked together. There is no one who can do this process with me as well as he can,” which further fueled speculation about their collaboration.
In his social media post, Lukather clarified his involvement with Alex Van Halen, stating that he has indeed assisted the drummer in reviewing unheard recordings. However, he was quick to point out that his contribution did not extend to performing new guitar parts or recording sessions. He described his role more as a “co-producer or something,” highlighting the nature of his input rather than an active participation in music creation.

Lukather elaborated, “Al asked me to help him go through a ton of unfinished recordings of Al and Ed writing and recording that never saw the light of day.” He insisted, “As of now that’s all I got. The fact that ANYONE would think for even a second that I would play anything on this is ridiculous. I have too much love and respect for that, and I play nothing like Ed.” This statement underscores his deep admiration for the band and its iconic guitarist.
