Warner Bros. is primed to elevate the excitement at CinemaCon with a spectacular presentation showcasing James Gunn’s highly anticipated film, Superman. The buzz surrounding this superhero adventure is reaching unprecedented heights, with significant expectations resting on the film’s ability to resonate with audiences. During the event, David Corenswet expressed heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity to portray the legendary Son of Krypton, sharing his aspirations to bring a fresh perspective to this iconic character for both contemporary viewers and future generations of fans.

The DC panel dedicated to Superman commenced with an exclusive behind-the-scenes introduction that highlighted the film’s emotional core and powerful themes of hope and resilience. The creative team emphasized that this iteration of Superman aims to return to the character’s roots, focusing solely on his noble mission to protect humanity. James Gunn and Peter Safran took center stage, confidently declaring this summer as the “Summer of Superman,” promising fans an unforgettable cinematic experience.

This dynamic duo is dedicated to transforming the landscape of superhero films through their ambitious Gods and Monsters initiative. Gunn revealed that he was first approached about directing Superman back in 2018, mentioning that while he was also offered Suicide Squad, he felt drawn to that project over portraying the classic character. He noted concerns that some viewed Superman as somewhat outdated. To counter this perception, he aims to incorporate imaginative elements reminiscent of the classic Max Fleischer cartoons, including characters such as Krypto, pocket universes, giant monsters, and magical elements. This unique approach to storytelling is set to breathe new life into the Superman franchise, making it unlike anything seen before.

Gunn shared a personal anecdote about Krypto, revealing that the character is inspired by his new dog, Ozu, whom he rescued after losing his previous pet. Ozu is quite the handful, having a playful nature that often leads to chaos, including chewing up Gunn’s shoes and even damaging his expensive laptop. The comedic mischief of Ozu prompted Gunn to envision what it would be like if such a spirited dog possessed superpowers, leading to the creation of Krypto, the Superdog, whose antics promise to add a humorous twist to the film.

Addressing the themes of the film, Gunn emphasized the importance of kindness and compassion, stating that the movie aims to celebrate these values. Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane, echoed this sentiment, noting that Superman embodies the essence of doing what is right. She encouraged young audiences to recognize that making the right choices is what makes someone truly admirable and ‘cool.’

When asked about other superhero roles they would like to portray, Corenswet expressed his desire to don the cape as Batman, while Brosnahan playfully mentioned her willingness to shave her head to portray Lex Luthor. Nicholas Hoult humorously added that he had auditioned for both Batman and Superman, showcasing the light-hearted camaraderie among the cast members.

During the presentation, Gunn unveiled an extended sneak peek of Superman, immersing the audience in an exhilarating scene that begins on the ice-covered planet of Krypton. As Superman crashes to the ground, he struggles to breathe and is visibly injured, mirroring moments from the initial teaser trailer. He calls out for Krypto, who joyfully rushes to his side. Despite his injuries, Superman manages to utter, “Krypto, take me home.” Krypto bounds around excitedly before taking hold of Superman’s cape, sprinting through the snowy landscape with incredible speed. Krypto transports Superman to the Fortress of Solitude, which magnificently rises from the icy terrain. Inside, robotic assistants lift Superman and bring him to safety, where he expresses his gratitude. The robots reply, “There is no need to thank us as we will not understand,” showcasing their unique perspective. They then proceed to assess his condition in a medical facility, exposing him to the rejuvenating rays of sunlight. In a dramatic moment, Superman screams as the life-giving power of the yellow sun begins to heal his injuries.
