The Old Man Cancelled by FX After Two Seasons

In a surprising turn of events, FX has officially announced the cancellation of the gripping thriller series The Old Man, which featured the acclaimed performances of Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow. After two impactful seasons, the show will not be returning, leaving fans and critics alike to reflect on its compelling narrative and character development.

The Old Man, cancelled

According to a report from Deadline, FX decided to end The Old Man after only two seasons. This series, adapted from the bestselling novel by Thomas Perry, follows the intriguing life of former CIA agent Dan Chase, portrayed by Jeff Bridges, and the complex character of Harold Harper, played by John Lithgow, who was once the Assistant Director at the FBI. The cancellation comes as a disappointment, especially considering the show’s dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim.

The decision to cancel the series was heavily influenced by numerous production delays that plagued its filming schedule. Initially, the production was halted due to the widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. When filming finally resumed, it faced another setback when Jeff Bridges was diagnosed with lymphoma and subsequently contracted COVID-19 during his treatment. After nearly a year of recovery, Bridges announced he was in remission, allowing the first season to be completed. However, the production of the second season faced additional interruptions due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Despite the first season’s success as the most-watched FX series debut on Hulu during its opening weekend, the prolonged gaps between seasons resulted in a dwindling audience that could not be recaptured.

In its second season, The Old Man followed Dan Chase and Harold Harper on a high-stakes mission to rescue Emily Chase, played by Alia Shawkat, after she was abducted by the formidable Afghan tribal leader, Faraz Hamzad, portrayed by Navid Negahban. The complexity of the narrative deepens as all three men vie for Emily’s affection, leading her into an identity crisis with significant implications for their intertwined lives. This season escalated the tension and drama, captivating audiences and critics alike.

Critic Alex Maidy expressed his admiration for the second season, noting that it surpassed the first with its intense storytelling and character arcs. He remarked, “The Old Man was a good show that took the leap to great and delivered a nail-biting run, which is one of the best second seasons I can recall,” emphasizing the show’s ability to maintain suspense without resorting to gratuitous violence. Maidy highlighted the profound themes of grappling with the consequences of one’s past, which resonated deeply, particularly given the caliber of the actors involved.
