The Rule: Highest-Grossing Indian Film of All Time?
Less than a month into its theatrical release, India’s Pushpa 2: The Rule has shattered nearly every box office record imaginable. In just a few days, it is poised to achieve an incredible milestone: surpassing Baahubali 2: The Conclusion to become the second-highest-grossing Indian film in global box office history. Featuring standout performances by Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna, Pushpa 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Pushpa: The Rise, which emerged as a surprise blockbuster during the pandemic in 2021, captivating audiences worldwide.
According to the latest figures released by the film’s production company, Mythri Movie Makers, Pushpa 2 has amassed an impressive ₹1760 crore globally within just 25 days of its release. This impressive revenue translates to approximately $205 million. Currently, Pushpa 2 is only about $2.5 million away from eclipsing Baahubali 2’s lifetime global earnings. Daily earnings have now stabilized at around half a million, indicating that it is on track to become the second-highest-grossing Indian film of all time by this weekend. The record for the highest-grossing Indian film remains held by the sports drama Dangal, which achieved around $230 million globally in 2016. Notably, Pushpa 2 has outperformed several other 2024 releases, including Red One ($184 million), The Fall Guy ($180 million), and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ($172 million).
In recent years, a number of Indian films have enjoyed substantial success on the international stage, with Baahubali 2 leading the charge in 2017, followed by the critically acclaimed RRR in 2022. Interestingly, both of these cinematic triumphs were directed by the renowned filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli. In 2023, several films featuring Shah Rukh Khan—widely regarded as one of the most prominent Indian movie stars of his era—crossed the $100 million mark globally. He kickstarted this trend with Pathaan and continued the momentum with Jawan. Additionally, the controversial revenge thriller Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, also surpassed the $100 million threshold worldwide. Earlier this year, the ambitious science-fiction film Kalki 2898 AD achieved comparable success.
Exciting Developments: A Third Installment of the Pushpa Franchise Is Underway
Drawing inspiration from the socially relevant rags-to-riches narratives characteristic of Indian cinema from the 1970s, Pushpa 2 intricately chronicles the transformation of a lowly goon into a formidable gang lord. It is essential to note that not all films that achieve success can be classified as “Bollywood” hits. The term is specifically designated for Hindi-language cinema, and India boasts numerous regional film industries that operate independently. For instance, Pushpa 2, along with RRR and Baahubali 2, is a Telugu-language film. Directed by the talented Sukumar, a third installment, titled Pushpa 3: The Rampage, has already been confirmed, promising more thrilling adventures in this acclaimed franchise.
