Third Studio Album in Progress Since 2021

Yes, the legendary progressive rock band, is in the exciting process of recording their third studio album in a remarkably short span of fewer than five years, as confirmed by keyboardist Geoff Downes. Prior to this creative surge, the band had only released three studio albums since the year 2000. This resurgence in their musical output marks a significant evolution in their artistic journey.

According to Downes in an exclusive interview with Classic Rock, “We’ve been diligently working on a new album for the past six months.” He further reveals that band member Steve is leading the project, expressing optimism that the album will be released later this year, much to the excitement of their dedicated fanbase.

There was some uncertainty regarding Yes’s return to the studio after the release of Heaven and Earth in 2014, which was the last album to feature the iconic bassist Chris Squire prior to his passing in 2015. However, following this, guitarist Steve Howe quickly produced two new albums: the critically acclaimed The Quest in 2021 and Mirror in the Sky in 2023. Both albums achieved impressive chart positions, making it to the Top 30 in the U.K..

Sadly, the band also faced the loss of long-time drummer Alan White, who passed away in 2022. Despite these challenges, Yes has maintained a consistent touring schedule, featuring Billy Sherwood, who was chosen by Squire as his replacement, alongside veteran drummer Jay Schellen. The new albums were launched amid significant anniversary reissues, including 1971’s Fragile and 1994’s Talk. A special reissue focusing on the classic Close to the Edge from 1972 was also released earlier this month, captivating fans with nostalgia.

Geoff Downes Addresses Fan Reactions to the Revamped Asia Tour

In addition to his work with Yes, Geoff Downes has successfully relaunched the band Asia, which was originally fronted by the late John Wetton and featured Steve Howe on guitar. With both Howe and drummer Carl Palmer opting out of the new project, Downes stands as the sole remaining original member. The reimagined lineup of Asia made waves with headlining U.S. performances last summer and is set to return to the stage in April for a series of shows in the U.K., where they will perform complete albums.

Expressing his passion for the band’s legacy, Downes states, “The last thing I wanted was to put the music of Asia in a locker and say I would never revisit it.” He emphasizes the opportunity to perform the first three landmark albums, which hold immense significance to both the band and their fans.

While acknowledging that some fans are skeptical about the new lineup, referring to them as “keyboard warriors” who openly express their disagreement, Downes remains steadfast. He acknowledges the criticism but states, “Everyone has a voice, and some comments are rather amusing. However, I have enough experience to brush off such negativity and continue forward. The dissenters will not deter us from our musical journey.”
