When legendary bands like Ratt and Def Leppard were electrifying arenas with their performances amidst challenging acoustics and overpowering echoes, scaling back the number of notes played allowed the music to breathe, resonating more effectively with audiences from the front row to the nosebleeds. The simplicity of the bass parts also meant that the bassist faced fewer restrictions, a crucial factor during an era defined by extravagant stage performances.
“If I’m gonna play less, I perform more,” said Rudy Sarzo, bassist of Quiet Riot and former member of Ozzy Osbourne‘s band, during an interview on Spector Player Profiles. “For example, if I’m just playing straightforward bass lines, I might put the bass on my head or behind my neck. Growing up, I observed many uninspired performances, and I promised myself that if I ever graced a large stage, I would not be dull. Therefore, I frequently engage with the audience during my performances.”
