This revelation emerged during the January 9 episode of Lowe’s Literally podcast, where he discussed with Bill Simmons, the executive producer of HBO’s popular documentary Yacht Rock, his brief contemplation of shifting from acting to a music career.

Reflecting on his past, Lowe candidly shared, “There was a minute in the ’80s where I was definitely doing too much Bolivian marching powder and just being a fucking lunatic.” He elaborated on the unique struggle many young actors face, being too mature for their previous roles yet not yet seasoned enough for the iconic characters that define a lasting legacy.

His passion for music is undeniable, as he expressed, “I love music so much that I got it into my head that maybe I should think more about music. And I cut a demo with Toto.” This statement piqued the curiosity of fans and music enthusiasts alike, igniting discussions about the potential collaboration between the actor and the legendary rock band.

Clarifying the Misunderstanding Surrounding Rob Lowe’s Studio Session

Karas stated, “Toto as a band never did a session with Rob Lowe,” emphasizing that the guitarist Steve Lukather was taken aback by the sudden spotlight on Lowe’s story. He affirmed, “The reporting is not accurate.” This clarification is crucial, as it highlights the importance of accuracy in recounting interactions between artists.

The spokesperson further explained that Rob Lowe did indeed spend one afternoon in a studio setting, but it was only with two members of Toto—David Paich and Steve Porcaro. Both musicians are highly regarded not only for their contributions to Toto but also for their extensive experience as session players, collaborating with some of the biggest names in the music industry. During this particular session, Paich and Porcaro were engaged in a project outside of Toto when a producer suggested the idea of having Lowe try his hand at vocal work. Unfortunately, this venture did not lead to any significant musical collaboration, leaving fans to wonder about the unfulfilled potential.

Interestingly, while Lukather was not present for this studio session, he did confirm a brief encounter with Lowe in 1985 while they were both in Japan, noting that they have not crossed paths since that time.
