woman and man working collaboratively, the man is taking the woman seriously

I recently came across an insightful TikTok video by Katie Tucci (@kaytuc) discussing effective strategies for ensuring men take you seriously in the workplace. This sparked my interest and I believe it could lead to a valuable conversation here. (For more details, check out this Buzzfeed article that summarizes her key points.) Although workplace sexism has improved significantly over the years, many women still feel the need to navigate their behavior carefully to gain respect from male colleagues. What are your top recommendations for making sure that men recognize your professionalism and capabilities at work?

As a newly minted lawyer and former paralegal, Katie has established a set of personal guidelines for her interactions with male colleagues. These include maintaining a firm handshake, introducing herself with both her first and last names, and predominantly using declarative statements to convey confidence. Notably, she mentions that she refrains from smiling altogether. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of taking the initiative in various situations, whether it’s concluding meetings or making introductions. This proactive approach aims to encourage others to follow her lead, creating a more dynamic and assertive atmosphere in the workplace.

to be the one initiating whatever we’re doing next, whether it’s standing up to move and end the meeting, whether it’s shaking hands at the door to say goodbye, and whether it’s moving someone from one space to another. I’m the one who starts doing it to get everyone else to follow me.

While I find much of her advice to be practical and applicable to a professional context, I personally might not adhere to such strict rules. Striking a balance between professionalism and authenticity can be crucial in fostering genuine relationships in the workplace.

However, one point that raised my eyebrows was her firm stance against being addressed with terms like “honey” or “sweetheart.” I can see how this might be particularly challenging for junior lawyers, as navigating these interactions carefully is essential while maintaining professionalism.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with saying, ‘You know, I really don’t think you are interested in engaging in this meeting with me in good faith. So I’m going to have to continue to use my time elsewhere.’ This is the most important part. You cannot let them get away with that. Do not accept an apology. Do not normalize it. Do not nod your head and smile. I know it’s incredibly uncomfortable. I know it’s incredibly terrifying. And honestly this took me years to feel comfortable doing. You stand your ground, you look them in the eye, and you say, ‘My name is not sweetheart. I need you to provide me with the contact information of someone who is not you who also works on this case so I can communicate with them.’ And then you walk away.

What a powerful way to assert oneself! However, this could create complications for a junior lawyer, especially when dealing with clients, opposing parties, or co-counsel. I’m curious to hear your thoughts on this approach and whether you believe it’s effective in every context.

Readers, I invite you to share your perspectives on Katie’s advice and specifically on her approach to being called “sweetheart.” How would you advise someone in that situation? Are there any additional tips or strategies you think would be beneficial for women seeking to establish their authority in a professional setting?
