U2’s Next Album: Will It Include Folk Music?
The Edge, the renowned guitarist of U2, recently revealed that the band is collaborating with the legendary producer Brian Eno to create music infused with an Irish folk element, which may feature in their upcoming album. This innovative approach marks a significant evolution in their sound, blending traditional influences with modern rock, a direction that fans are eagerly anticipating.
After the release of Songs of Experience in 2017, U2 followed up with Songs of Surrender last year, showcasing fresh recordings of their classic tracks. Additionally, they have just unveiled How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb, a compilation that includes unreleased sessions from 2004, offering fans a glimpse into their creative process during that era.
In 2023, The Edge expressed a desire to explore a more intense musical style, stating, “I’ve been working on new stuff … that’s much more vital and requires a U2 band sound to fulfill it. I’m not sure U2 are going to turn into AC/DC exactly. … But I’m absolutely convinced that the guitar is going to be front and center.” This statement signals a potential shift in their musical landscape, promising exciting new material that embraces a more aggressive tone.

During a recent interview with BBC Radio 2, The Edge described the “crazy new music” they are currently producing with Eno. He elaborated, saying, “Bono and I are working on some crazy kind of sci-fi Irish folk music, which could end up becoming a part of the new U2 album. We’re not sure yet; we’ll see.” The melding of genres indicates an adventurous spirit within the band as they push the boundaries of their sound.
He further explained, “Part of our kind of process is to go so widely away from, off track, and … the process of bringing things back on track is kind of how you get sort of unique sounding music.” This creative philosophy highlights U2’s commitment to innovation and their willingness to experiment, ensuring that their music remains fresh and engaging.
Additionally, The Edge mentioned the involvement of “a bunch of beautiful Irish musicians” in the project, suggesting that their rich cultural heritage will play a significant role in shaping the new album’s sound and feel, creating a tapestry of musical influences that resonate with their roots.
Exciting News: Larry Mullen’s Return to Collaborate with U2
“We’re at that great phase where we don’t have to overthink it,” The Edge continued. “We’re just making music and loving that process. And then we’ll figure out where things belong afterwards. So there’s a couple of different projects.” This approach emphasizes the collaborative spirit within the band, allowing creativity to flow freely without the constraints of perfectionism.
Drummer Larry Mullen, who took a break for surgery in September 2023, is back in the studio with U2. Describing the reunion as “wonderful,” The Edge remarked, “We’ve got him in the studio. He’s good. He’s taking it easy, but he’s back in the saddle on the drums [and] doing some recording with us. And so we’ll be doing a bit more of that before the end of the year.” Mullen’s return not only revitalizes the band’s dynamic but also promises an exciting continuation of their musical journey.
