Unissued 1977 Album ‘Oceanside Countryside’ by Neil Young
Renowned musician Neil Young has unveiled plans to release his previously unreleased album, Oceanside Countryside, which was recorded over a span from May to December in 1977. This much-anticipated album is set to hit the shelves on February 14, and it forms part of Young’s esteemed Analog Originals series. The collection consists of ten tracks that resonate with the themes found in his 1978 album, Comes a Time. Notably, three tracks—”Goin’ Back,” “Human Highway,” and “Field of Opportunity”—were subsequently featured on Young’s ninth studio album, which debuted in October of the same year.
In a statement regarding this exciting release, Young emphasized, “This analog original album was recorded in 1977 and unreleased.” He elaborated on the authenticity of this project, mentioning that these songs are the original mixes from the recordings, arranged in the order he envisioned for the album. The vocals and instruments were meticulously recorded in Florida at Triad Studios and in Malibu at Indigo Studio. Young also collaborated with his talented band of friends, including Ben Keith, Joe Osborn, Karl T. Himmel, and Rufus Thibodeaux, at Crazy Mama’s in Nashville for the Countryside tracks.

“I hope you enjoy this treasure of an Analog Original recording, captured by Tim Mulligan, as much as I do,” Young expressed. Reflecting on the past, he mused that perhaps he should have released this album at that time, indicating the timeless quality of this music.
The album’s first side showcases Young’s solo performances, while Side Two features contributions from notable musicians, including steel guitarist Ben Keith, fiddle player Rufus Thibodeaux, drummers Karl T. Himmel and Levon Helm, along with bassists Joe Osborne and Tim Drummond, enriching the sound and depth of the album.
