War Child Benefit Single Features Hot Chip and Sleaford Mods
U.K. indie music icons, Hot Chip and Sleaford Mods, have joined forces, blending their distinct musical styles to create two exciting tracks as part of a benefit single for the esteemed War Child charity, which is dedicated to supporting children affected by armed conflict.
The two newly crafted tracks – titled “Nom Nom Nom” and “Cat Burglar” – were recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, a place synonymous with musical history, and have been pressed to a limited edition 7″ vinyl. This special release is accompanied by unique artwork from renowned English artist David Shrigley, adding an artistic touch to the musical experience.
All proceeds generated from the sale of this exclusive single will be donated to War Child, an organization focused on enhancing the psychosocial wellbeing of children who have been impacted by conflict and war. This initiative reflects a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of vulnerable youth around the world.
This exciting collaboration emerged from Abbey Road’s Lock-In series, which aims to shed light on the creative musical process, offering insights into an otherwise hidden experience. For this particular Lock-In, the London-based band Hot Chip welcomed the Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods into the studio, resulting in a partnership that has been affectionately dubbed ‘Hot Mods’.
Reflecting on their experience, Hot Chip expressed, “Creating these tracks in just one day at Abbey Road was an unforgettable journey. We entered the studio without a specific plan, allowing spontaneity to guide our collaboration. The improvisational spirit was strong, and egos were left at the door. We are incredibly thankful to Sleaford Mods for their participation and take immense pride in the outcome.”
Sleaford Mods’ Jason Williamson shared his perspective, stating, “We approached the day with an open mind and fully embraced the creative process.” He elaborated, “‘Nom Nom Nom’ lyrically continues themes from our recent album UK GRIM and builds upon Andrew’s keyboard riff, enhanced further by Hot Chip’s contributions, culminating in a remarkable chorus delivered by Alexis.”
He further described the second track, “‘Cat Burglar’ is an eclectic fusion of progressive rock and B-52s inspired jam that delves into the intricate and narrow corridors of contemporary human experience, capturing the essence of modern life in a creative and thought-provoking way.”
As Williamson noted, Sleaford Mods recently released their album UK GRIM in 2023, which achieved the highest chart position of their career, peaking at No. 3 on the U.K. charts. In a similar vein, Hot Chip’s latest project was the 2022 album Freakout/Release, which reached an impressive No. 16 in the charts, demonstrating both bands’ significant impact on the music scene.
