Waterloo Records Announces New Ownership and Move in Austin
Austin’s Waterloo Records has been a vital part of the city’s vibrant music scene since its establishment in 1982. This beloved institution is now embarking on an exciting new chapter that promises to enhance its legacy and community engagement.
After more than forty years of being the pulse of Austin’s music culture, owner John Kunz has made the momentous decision to transfer ownership to a dynamic new team—Caren Kelleher, the Founder & CEO of Gold Rush Vinyl, alongside local entrepreneur Trey Watson. This transition marks a significant evolution for the store, ensuring its continued impact on the local and wider music community.
In addition to the ownership change, Waterloo Records is set to relocate to a more spacious venue at 1105 North Lamar this coming spring. This move signifies a commitment to growth and the enhancement of customer experiences, allowing for a broader range of events and activities in a welcoming environment.
For decades, Waterloo Records has served as a cultural epicenter for both locals and visitors, hosting remarkable in-store performances by iconic artists such as Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, and Nirvana. The store also played an instrumental role in co-founding Record Store Day in 2008, further solidifying its status as an essential destination for music lovers.
“My enduring vision has always been for Waterloo Records & Video to thrive indefinitely, fostering Austin’s rich music culture and community,” expressed John Kunz. This heartfelt statement underscores his dedication to ensuring that the store continues to flourish and serve the community for years to come.
“Now with this transition, I’ve ticked all the right boxes: a new, larger home just five blocks away; Caren and Trey stepping in as my talented local partners in the music industry; retaining my dedicated team, who will gain opportunities for ownership; and preserving all of Waterloo Records’ cherished traditions and innovative spirit. As a minority partner instead of the sole proprietor, I can finally work less and enjoy more. Thank you, Austin!”
“John, Trey, and I view this as a rare opportunity to protect and enhance an iconic music business in a city we love,” shared Caren Kelleher. She reflected on the welcoming friendship she received from John when she first moved to Austin to launch Gold Rush Vinyl, highlighting the importance of their relationship and her commitment to the future of Waterloo Records.
Trey Watson, an experienced entrepreneur with deep roots in Austin’s music and media landscape, emphasized the significance of Waterloo’s legacy within the city.
“Since 1982, Waterloo Records has been an integral part of Austin’s cultural identity, serving as a small business where the community gathers to celebrate music. I am honored that John Kunz has entrusted our team with steering Waterloo into the future, and we have exciting plans that will enhance the experience for everyone involved,” he stated, expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming changes.
The relocation to 1105 North Lamar signifies a major upgrade for Waterloo Records, increasing its current 6,400 square feet of space by 50%. This expansion will facilitate larger events, improved in-store performances, and better parking options, all contributing to a more enjoyable shopping experience for music enthusiasts.
The new location, formerly home to Louis Shanks Furniture and subsequently a Whole Foods regional office, offers modern amenities while retaining its close proximity to downtown Austin and nearby music venues. This strategic move reinforces Waterloo’s commitment to remaining a premier destination for both music fans and artists alike, fostering a thriving community for all.
This transition arrives at a critical juncture for Austin, a city renowned for its rich musical heritage, which is now also experiencing rapid growth as a global technology hub. “Austin’s unique soul drew me here over 25 years ago, and it continues to attract people today,” noted Watson, encapsulating the city’s magnetic appeal and the exciting prospects ahead for Waterloo Records.
