Wednesday Season 2: Jenna Ortega Returns with a Brooding Look
Jenna Ortega returning as Wednesday Addams in the
Wednesday series, which is generating buzz for its upcoming second season on Netflix. Viewers can look forward to Ortega stepping back into her role at Nevermore Academy, with the creative vision of
Tim Burton, following their successful collaboration on the box office hit
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In the first season, we saw Wednesday, the world’s quirkiest teenager, navigating her way through the eerie halls of Nevermore Academy, a school where she feels out of place. Instead of fitting in with her peers, she embarks on a thrilling quest to unravel a chilling murder mystery that looms over the town of Jericho. Additionally, she becomes entangled in a complicated love triangle involving Tyler (
Hunter Doohan) and Xavier (
Percy Hynes White), although neither relationship truly resonates with her. Thankfully, in the upcoming season, she plans to focus more on embracing her unique quirks and the darker elements of her character.
Jenna Ortega Emphasizes a Shift Away from Romance for Wednesday in Season 2
Ortega is stepping up her role as a producer in the second season, marking a significant transition in her creative journey. Her first directive was to delve deeper into the character’s inherent darkness, embracing the shadows that come with Wednesday and her unforgettable, eccentric family. The producers aim to enhance the creepy and kooky elements of the narrative, staying true to the iconic character’s roots and her rich heritage.
“We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more,” she shared. “Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously. We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”
As Ortega expands her influence as a producer, she has actively contributed to the script, modifying lines that she felt didn’t resonate with Wednesday’s unique persona. This collaborative effort has made her feel at ease working alongside the creative team, enhancing the overall storytelling experience.
“We had already been throwing out so many ideas, and I’m somebody who’s very hands-on. I want to know what’s going on. And with a character like Wednesday, who is so beloved and such a legend, I just really didn’t want to get her wrong,” Ortega stated. “So I try to have as many conversations as possible. On set, with the writers and Tim [Burton], we all would get together and decide, ‘Okay, what works and what doesn’t? It was naturally already very collaborative.”
Wednesday is set to return to Netflix in 2025, promising more thrilling adventures and deeper explorations of its beloved characters.
